I've driven an old, green car. I think it was a Plymouth from the 40's.

I don't really care, I'd trade my 75s exempt status for a sniff only rule for all cars in heart beat. It would allow me to build something a little more modern to drive as a daily. I agree with the fact that cars should run clean, the moronic nature of the visual inspection and CARB approved parts kill me.

That's a good point. I never understood the whole OMG DON'T TOUCH TEH SMOG PUMP or other various parts on the car because "the factory knows best." If there's a better way to do something and it's simplified and/or the car runs cleaner with it, why can't we modify something?

Ditto. I'm afraid to even do anything to the E30 because of all the CARB bs. :(

when this happens, someone will open up an exhaust shop that refits catalytic converters with easy access flanges on both sides. this way you have your DD cat which has nothing inside of it except loudness.....and then you have your emission cat for 'the big day'.
Kind of like a tuxedo, except for noxious waste gasses.

Besides, E30s should get a special exemption for being awesome.

Was saving my 77' F100 for years knowing that it would become exempt. They changed the rules on me .I still have to take it to my special friend. Keeping it stock for the visual. Quite the pisser. So much for my sleeper P U. Cali sucks on vehicle rules.

Its all about money. If the state can find a way to squeeze more money from you they'll do it.

When inspections stop making people money you might be able to talk them out of doing them.
                            If in doubt... Flat out

(some of the shitheaps I see make me wonder who is gonna die first)

                              2. National smog laws. Leave us 20+ year old cars alone, AFTER we pass a safety inspection, but test everything else. Hell, I would be OK with even a tailpipe sniff on all vehicles...and I am about to move to a non-smog city.
We have that in Ontario. It's not hard to pass, as long as your ball joints don't have major play and all other suspension componants are intact and working, you don't have a problem. It weeds out all the absolute shit cars, they're only needed on change of ownership or if a Ministry of Transportation officer pulls you over and gives you a order of inspection (which is very seldom and you need to really piss a cop off for them to call MTO.)

And we also have the tailpipe sniffer test, it's not that big of a hassle, and not hard to pass, I had a high flow magnaflow race cat on my 318 and still passed with my 24v. It was close but it's not hard to pass. Again, it weeds out the cars that are garbage and burning every fluid imaginable.

Essentially if your car is in pretty good working order you should pass, if not you can either fix it, or find a crooked mechanic to write you up a safety for a fee...

This is true. When recently re-registering my car, I glanced down to the lower corner of the postcard, which listed my eta's taxable value as 19,125 dollars. Very convenient that they don't use updated blue book value for calculating taxes.....(or account for the fact that it's a POS)

                                19125 Iraqi dinar maybe.....
