Anybody else ever had problems with their convergence chips burning out?

I got a Sony 42" DLP from a guy I work with for free because you couldn't get the lenses to adjust properly, cost me $50 for new chips and a couple hours to take the circuit boards out and replace the chips... I have heard that this is a problem with several Brands of DLP tv's.

      ^Don't know.

TV's are getting so cheap right now, depending on how long the bulb in mine lasts will determine if we buy a new bulb for it or just buy a new TV. My buddy and I have been in a TV war for the last 4-5 years always buying something slightly bigger then the other.

Then he bought his new house and dropped an 80" Mistu DLP in it.

I've got a 50" Toshiba DLP, about 5 years old now, and the picture is great. The only problem with mine has been the fact that i've had to replace the lamp in it 3 times. That gets really old every 1.5 years @ 130$ ea. I don't think that problem is representative of all DLP's, just that model. :(

If they offer a warranty/protection plan that covers the bulbs, buy it. Picked up my DLP back in 07, it's already been through 2 bulbs. They're ~270 or so a piece. Picked up the sears 5 year for 140 bucks, it's already paid for itself.

Other than that? Great picture, excellent contrast, very warm colors. Real light, I think mine weighs like 30 pounds.

Did you guys never properly adjust your screens after getting them home? Use a home theatre setup disc or something, or do you just leave the TV on 24/7? When you pick them up, all the brightness/contrast/color settings are set-up to look good under florescent light of a store. It's akin to driving around at redline all the time.

I bought my DLP in Oct '06 and it's still going strong on the original bulb.

Although now that I've said, I'm sure I'll walk out to the living room and it won't come on.

First bulb lasted 2 1/2 years, second one lasted 3 months. Settings are moderate, nothing maxed out.
