$300 a month and you keep it that cold in the house?

I think our combined electricity/gas bills for last month were $140. And we've been keeping the house at 74.

Yes, we can afford things, other then sitting around in the house fighting off hypothermia.

3/4 of my roommates were not there for a couple weeks, and our bill was $402 for basically the same period. Chances are, your house is poorly insulated.

I've already called Pepco to come out and inspect the house but now I'm in the process of analyzing all of the total utilities usages for the past 6 months we've been in the house. After charting the electricity use per day, from Aug 9 to Dec 9 each month saw an avg 46.62% increase in usage!! From Dec 9th to Jan 10th saw an increase of 68.51% in usage at 132.64Kwh/day (over the previous month)!! What astounds me even more is that 4 out of the 5 of us in the house weren't even there for 2 of the 4 weeks in the billing period, which meant the lights were out, the computers were off, and we weren't using the water heater. The heating is a gas based system, water heater is electric but the water bill does not correlate to the increase in total electricity usage. I went outside and read the meter, if my calculations are correct,in the last 10 days we are averaging 208kwh per day!!! That's a 56.81% increase over last month!!!! This makes absolutely no sense whatsoever and projects that our bill for the Jan 10 - Feb 10 bill will be $1290.

can someone explain this to me?? it doesn't make any sense, I'm putting in a dispute with the electric company for the usage for the past 6 months. This is insane!!
i wish i was this good at math.

pull the meter out, turn it upside down... slam it back in.... free power! just remember to put it back the way you found it after heavy electricity usage;-)

Here in Norcal, PG&E (the local monopoly) is replacing all meters with these super hi tech digital (maybe gps) meters. A lot of people are crying rape with wrong reads/faulty meters.

I just had my meter replaced with the "ERT" meter. It's able to be read from the street. Is the meter dial spinning like 15 rpm??? What is your KWH cost? Mine is 12 cents. This should be interesting to see.

it gets pretty good in the summer though, well 200ish i guess, maybe not that much

If you have electric baseboard heaters it can go nuts. My first year in the house I'm currently in went from $65/mo to about $350 once the cold set in. I bought a coal stove & never looked back.

When I was on Hawai'i last year my host said they're paying $.52/KWH.

Just moved into a new house...As far as I know the water heater is always on...other wise when you cme home and turn on shower it would be hours to get warm water.

Plus in the winter you want to keep the pipes warm from freezing...Check you windows and door..not so much for warm air leaving but cold air coming in...we spent 9000$ replacing shit in this house so door/windows/vents are energy efficient..and most appliances

Are you in a multiple unit apartment? Mixups and cross-circuits can definitely happen there especially in older ones where the wiring looks shady it usually is. Could even be that the neighbor is getting your bill and you're getting his.

A friend of mine was actually in a situation where everyone shared an electric drier and the basement was on HIS meter. First few months he got boned until they worked something out.
