When he rang the doorbell the mother answered the door telling him it was a bad time, and that he should come back later, and then he saw the father (pretending to be) stumbling drunk with his pistol in hand shouting "let him in, he's gotta ask me something! What do you wanna ask Craig?" My boss bolted for his car and made it about a 1/4 mile away before they got him on his cell, telling him to come back.

To me its not really about tradition, its about respect for her parents. Remember, you will be there one day and want respect from your daughter's boyfriend. I'm with all you homos that dont just want a skank or a girl that got tired of sucking and fucking random dick in college.

I think what most of the people on here that don't understand asking the parents is that by not asking you are going against the fundamentals of marriage. Marriage is the foundation for family and if you are going to start a family it takes a family member. Are you guys afraid that you will not be accepted?

I wouldnt even consider marrying a girl that I wasnt 100% positive that the parents already accepted me, got over whatever issue that had with me, and had already welcomed me into the family with gatherings, events, vacations, etc..
Unless the parents are super strict or whatever, but chances are I wouldnt fuck around with a girl with parents like that.

I think it is great to be accpeted 100% by the in-laws. That makes for the ideal situation and tasty Sunday evening roast beef dinner. Asking the parents is a great tradiational procedure. But hey, if the girl loves you and the inlaws don't because a) you're white trash, b) a pimp, c) drive an e30, d) all the above. What are you gonna do? Leave the chick?

No. Probably go get fucking married regardless. This aint the parents life. This is our life (girl + me, hypothetically).

OP - Fuck the inlaws. PIIHB.

Everything went well. Her mom cried, her dad shook my hand, hugged me and then wanted to discuss the oil change on his motorcycle. I tried to pay for lunch but they refused and now Im in the family I guess.

Thanks for the advice and funny scenarios I could play through in my head. I just went with the confident approach and succeeded rather well.

So im proposing next week. Im pumped.

Nope, I'd still marry her without parental consent. But the ideal situation you described sounds better.

Good deal, man. Married life, despite what poor excuses for boys that can shave will tell you, rocks.

Lee, it's not about tradition. It truly is about just showing respect. I never went to my Father in law to ask "permission" but his "blessing". It's all in how you phrase it. Because everyone is responsible for themselves and my wife had to make that choice on her own. Her parents raised her well as she's a magnificent, beautiful person but they had control issues. Them saying "No." really just means that they are going to piss and moan, throw a fit about whatever have you and hopefully, if they are not totally proud and realize that you mean the best and love/respect/cherish/honor their daughter in the face of adversity, will get over it and move on. Nothing is static. Their opinions will change and only time will tell.

I do agree with Lee however, (fucking shocker to me) that while it's ideal if the parents love you, it's not a needed function of two people getting married. Has less to do with them than they would like to admit.

Congrats to the OP! Good luck, man and have fun. It's a good time if you make it one and don't let the stress become a mountain.
