The state Legislature is still wrangling over midyear budget cuts as our fiscal emergency continues, but the Assembly this morning took a few minutes to pass a resolution to declare the first week of March as "Cuss Free Week."

The resolution, adopted on a voice vote, was inspired by a junior high student in South Pasadena who founded a "No Cussing Club" at his junior high school.

Two gems from the resolution:

First, it restates the student's rationale that, "If pupils could say no to cussing, it would be easier to stay away from drugs, violence, and pornography and turn their focus to positive aspirations and goals."

And later, "The California Legislature invites the people of this state to take the No Cussing Challenge each year during the first week of March to improve our relationships, to set a tone of harmony and connectedness in our communities, and to inspire ourselves to higher endeavors."

The resolution was introduced by Assemblymembers Anthony Portantino, D-La Cañada Flintridge (Los Angeles County), and Cameron Symth, R-Santa Clarita (Los Angeles County). It goes to the state Senate next week. For more on the challenge, check out www.nocussing.com.
