    8.8 in Chile

Let's hope this isn't another Haiti

As the sun set in Chile on Saturday, a picture of the immense structural damage wrought by an early morning earthquake had come clearly into focus, with the nation's president estimating that 2 million people had been affected in some way.

Death toll is climbing, apparently most communication out of Concepcion (closest big city in Chile) is currently not operational.

We've even got Tsunami warnings over in Australia for this.

We have some members on here that live in Chile. "ivo316" comes to mind, i haven't watched any TV to see any news on this quake though.

Looks like Hawaii is in the most danger of a Tsunami. Expected to hit around 11:00 HST time.

I'm surprised the death toll isn't higher in Chile. I mean, 122 people isn't nothing, but 8.8 is one hell of a quake.

Yeah, 8.8 is a fucking huge earthquake. I experienced a 7.0 in 2001, and I thought that was big. An 8.8 is nearly 100 times larger! It's also the seventh largest recorded quake in history.

There are tsunami warnings everywhere in the Pacific. I wish I was in Seattle right now, I'd go down to Golden Gardens to see if there was anything significant.

CNN is showing footage from BJPenn.com, in anticipation for a tsunami at Hilo, Hawaii. BJ Penn is one of my favorite fighters, so I hope Hawaii, and especially Hilo is safe.

An 8.8 shaker that lasted 90 seconds.

A couple of aftershocks as well, 6.2 and 6.9 :eeek:

I experienced the Loma Preita quake in 1989 and that was a 6.9 and it shook for about 15 seconds - I can't even imagine a 8.8 that lasts 90 seconds.

Some wingnut is going to blame it on global warming.

                              quake

So, I know it's old nws, but just to let you know, everything is ok, still some people (around 10.000) in temporary homes, but it's been almost a year and the country recovered, basically the damage was due to the tsunami, not the quake.

In the Capital Santiago, a couple of bridges and buildings fell.

                              thanks for remebering.

I've been out for a while but came back, the E30 is out of storage now.

                              regards.
