It goes both ways. I tend to park far away from everyone (out in the boonies). Yet when I come back, a 'junky' car is parked next to me, even though the parking lot has TONS of other spots available. I've also noticed that other bmws park far as well.
I was with my friend in is Porsche 911 Carrera and we parked in an empty parking lot (large parking lot) and we watched some person park their Ford something riiiiight next to it. I just don't understand.
i will park at the farthest open area i can except when it gets sketchy to have my car sitting there. i try to stay within security camera view if at all possible. but yes, if theres another e30 i will try to park next to it in hopes of a mutual understanding not to ding doors no matter what.
as for stupid people parking right next to your car when its in a huge open lot, i hate that shit. it doesnt make sense at all.
I park in the widest, farthest, most ding-resistant spot in a lot. Yes, I will park next to other BMWs because most other BMWs are parked in the widest, farthest, most ding-resistant spots in a lot
another thing that helps is when you are parking far away and there are a bunch of open spots, park diagnally taking up two spots. Nearly impossible to get door dings. Fuck the losers that park next to you.
I search for cars that appear to be enthusiast owned or have a large following that prevents most people from accidentally owning that car. Anything tastefully modified I trust not to ding me.
Its best to avoid big trucks and cars that women tend to drive.

Eric, I am aware of this phenomenon. I am selective about parking spaces, yet I always get worked by some moron in a coupe with long doors or an SUV or something. My wife on the other hand, will park in the narrowest of space, yet her car has nary a door ding or a scratch.
I usually drive around the parking lot a couple time looking for an E30 to park next to. It's kinda like a little adventure everytime I go to the store or some shit.
