I don't understand that part. Oh, and this new "rule" is retarded. But call me a car enthusiast.
The issue is there are a few people claiming they couldnt. The problem is the only thing Toyota could prove is that the pedal doesnt return as it should in certain situations. A pedal not returning is a long way from an out of control car. And Toyota cant prove any of the claims that the car takes control, shifts into overdrive and goes full throttle at the nearest tree.

Its like the AUDI unintended acceleration claims in the 80s that nearly killed them in the US. The might have been legit throttle sticking (for reason that cause any throttle to stick) but most cases were old bitches who werent used to the more aggressive pedal box slamming on the gas instead of the brake. Shit, when i first got my audi twice I caught the gas pedal because I didnt have my foot placed properly.
        Im now E30less.

I can't. Especially the number of people who testified back in the Audi days "suddenly the car just took off-I had the brake pedal pushed as hard as I could, but they didn't work...."

Guess which pedal they were pushing.....

Not mention, in one case in the '90s, someone was suing Ford because of a UA event, but Ford got the case dropped when it was shown that a mere 20lbs of pedal force was required to stop the car even at full throttle....

I still say these bozos are flooring the wrong pedal...

Yeah as some said in car and driver they did a test of this wide open throttle while braking problem. They tested it along with the camry and tarus a roush mustang which has roughly 500 horse power and even at 120 mph with the throttle wide open they could still stop the car with the brake. Now granted it did take 904 feet to stop the car the fact that even at 120 and with 500 hp you can still stop the car with the brakes must mean that that most of these instances with the toyota's is really just driver error.

With the throttle over ride thing, I doubt it really matters to most people here on this board because I don't think the legislature can make people with 20+ year old cars with cable controlled throttles install some aftermarket safety throttle. Besides most people who really drive cars would just rip it off anyway.

There's a difference, however, between mandates designed to protect consumers from bad design, and mandates to protect consumers from themselves.....

I think we need better driver education, not more complex safety nets...
                        A big +1

Driver training in this country is a joke. They don't even take you out driving in drivers ed, all they do is teach you the rules. I know way too many people that should not be driving that passed their tests with flying colors.

If you look at every police report of the crashes that killed someone who the gov't is blaming on a stuck throttle, you'll find that not one case has been proven to be because of a stuck accel. pedal issue. Its a gov't witch hunt against Toyota and they are having to make their cars idiot proof now.
