    wmv converter?

My WD media player won't play a couple .wmv files and I want to quickly convert them to .avi for example. Can someone recommend a good (possibly even freeware) converter?

So far I've tried handbrake and FormatFactory, first one is buggy as hell, second one is sloooooow.

http://www.zamzar.com/ just upload the files here. This is a pretty awesome site, and I think that it converts that type. Give it a try.

Seems like a waste of time to upload a big file, wait for the online conversion and then having to download it?

I need a stand alone app, not an online version. Thanks though!

For some reason it converts only about 20-40% and stops w/o any errors?

Trying to convert a batch of 200mb .wmv files, they play fine on the same pc.

I've tired using FFmpeg and MEncoder option with or w/o "DirectShow Decode" option checked. Tried Stream Copy for both Video and Audio.. Output is set to AVI / Xvid / mp3.

Runs through it's process and "finishes" at 26.278 MB out of 191mb file.

Tried also using AVI / DivX / mp3.... VideoScaleSize set to NoChange, 23.976fps...runs and "finishes" at "6,028,286"

What settings are you guys using?

my settings depend on which file im trying to convert. um, id post up my screen shot but i gotta leave work early today.

if it still doesnt work out for you then upload one of your file to rapidshare then send me the link to download it then i will play with the settings.

have you tried windows movie maker? I'm pretty sure it can do divix/xvid if you have the codecs installed, and obviously WMV is it's native format. If you have windows 7 it has to be downloaded seperately but it should come with XP.

I have, I am on XP and it's version of Movie Maker can only save to WMV unless you select "DV-AVI (NTSC)" setting...

personally I like MPC a bit better than VLC, it's quite a bit cleaner/simpler, but I have both for the rare case that MPC doesn't work.

Pretty sure I had WMM ouputting to a divix file before.. but I may have used Nero to convert it?

are you using a standalone hardware player or something? I have a great DVD player that does divix files, but these days I mostly download MKVs.
