This is awesome, but I'd feel a little weird painting over 50 years of lovingly inflicted damage. I'd say just clean it up and get it working right.
Remember that, just like a car, if a restoration isn't done right it can look really cheesy. On the other hand, a good restoration of an old beater is a beautiful thing.

Looks awesome! Like others have said -- make sure you restore it correctly. I'd suggest talking with someone that knows these machines first.tasty
