    Marlin Rifles

Well I want to buy a new Marlin. Ive never owned one but fird a .357, .38 and the 450 Marlin.

I really fell in love with the simplicity of the action and th old timey feel of the overall rifle.

SO long story short Im interested in the .44 mag/.44 special, I want something chambered in handgun ammo for the price and being able to shoot it at the ranges in my area. But also somethign powerfull enough to try and do some deer hunting. (I have a .30-06)

The model 1894 in either blued or SS is the one im interested in. Anyone ever own one or have any exp with one?

No, you can ask questions. Most of the people in that thread know a lot about different guns and what they are practical for.

i have had a few Marlins. i like my 35 rem lever action better, but that is a personal preference. i would not count on deer hunting with it. varmit hunting probably, i have a red dot on my 35 Rem and it will take a large portion out of a coyote in a big ball of fur, but i have a Saco 30.06 for deer/elk hunting. unless you want to creep up really close i would stick to the 30.06 for deer hunting.

You dont need anything more than a 44 for deer hunting unless you are gonna whack em at more that 100yds.

I know lots of guys that still kill deer every year to this day with a .22 mag

i'd rather take the long shots. if i wanted to creep up close, i'd bow hunt.

I have a Marlin in 30-30. Great build quality and awesome value for the money. The simplicity and feel made me buy one.

All my shots are under 100 yards and the 30-30 is more than enough for deer.

Were I am in the country most of the shots ive taken are relitivly up close. I just wan tto stay within the pistol cartridge range.

I've had a Marlin 30-30 for years, great "brush" gun. I like the idea of sharing ammo across platforms. Cowboys often used .45 Long Colt in their single action pistols, and would use this caliber in their Winchester '94's. The .44 magnum round is a pretty powerful round, so it should be fine for medium sized game that isn't too far away. You'll have to check the ballistics for the round. Today, pistol ammo can be about as expensive as regular rifle hunting ammo, so that is something to keep in mind. Availability is another consideration as well. Henry makes some decent lever actions, so you may want to check them out.

I picked up a NIB one in .30-30 at a gun show. Guy offered me 300 for it and it was a nice rifle but I told him I'd browse around a little more and came across a 1894 Winchester in the same caliber. Between the two I took the Winchester, it was older and was used but the way the action fit together just appealed to me more. They both had "sloppy" loose actions. I went home with the Winchester and haven't looked back since.

I have many marlins, and the used one's are better than the modern ones. Older 1894's also have problems with the carriers, but they can be warrantied for little more than shipping. I have an 1894c in 38sp/357mag which I also have many revolvers chambered in the same. If you want a plinker get the 38/357 and get a 30/30 for deer. The 44 1894 is way too expensive to shoot and is mediocre for deer. The 30-30 has taken more deer in it's existence than any other round. Plus, 30/30 is probably cheaper than 44mag right now.

If you take long shots, I highly recommend the xlr guns designed for the rubber tip hornady rounds. I'd trust my 30-30 xlr to 200yrds with those rounds.

Hornady now makes lever action specific ammo. i have lots of good things about, but have not tried it personally since i use my bullpup mostly. for coyote around here.

the ammo is supposed to give you greater range and accuracy.

like was stated before, hand gun ammo is not really that much cheaper right now. obama panic drove the prices up and although guns themselves have come back down to a reasonable price level, ammo has stayed abnormally high. rifle has not changed much except for .223.

                              have you looked into reloading?
i have dies for everything i own so if i have time i will load up a bunch of bullest and play with the powder, seating depth, etc to try to dial in bullets for that gun.
                              just a thought.
