    Working at the Kitchen Table

So, soon I hope to be the proud new owner/leaser of a house. I will be moving the girlfriend in when I finally choose a house to buy/lease. We are having a kid, and if all goes well someday soon down the road we will get married and live happily ever after.

One thing that got brought up, don't even really remember how, but it did come up, was that I am not allowed to have car parts and the like inside the house. The topic came up a few days ago, and then for some reason my grandma brought it up at dinner again tonight, where in they both ganged up on me, telling me that inside the house is no place to be working on stuff while my dad just sat there telling me that I was fighting a loosing battle. My argument is that sometimes it is just better to work on things in the house. My favorite place if I do something inside is the kitchen table. Is it weird to like to work at the kitchen table??? She says that is what a work bench out in the garage is for. I agree that a work bench in the garage would be a nice thing, and I have every intention of have a rather nice one, but a work bench and the kitchen table are two very dfferent places.

So what do you guys think, am I strange to want to be working on whatever I want inside the house? It usually stays at the table, and I am a big boy and can clean up after myself. I usually don't even make a big mess. Opinions? Thoughts?

I'd say it's a little late to be choosing a girlfriend if you've already got a kid on the way, but that's a whole different story...

I enjoy working on parts in the house as well. Things like lights, gauge clusters and seats are clean and easily moved around. A small workshop/laundry room in the basement is perfect.

I do most of my soldering at the kitchen table but that isn't greasy or anything. If she is adamant about it, just work on a bench in your office if you have one or the back porch. No reason to create a fight over something stupid like that.

you should have thought of the car thing before you knocked her up!

my house, i work on my shit where i want!
that being said, clean stuff is done inside on the table or kitchen counter if it is a quick thing like soldering. i also put at least a towel or old sheet down first.
i have to clean it up, because no one else is going to.

greasy shit stays outside. clean parts are stored in either the shed or shelves in a spare bedroom.

just wondering, how old are you?

Kitchen is better lit, more comfortable, warmer, etc.

Just set up an agreement with her. Agree to clean up after yourself every time, and stipulate that if you forget to, you promise not to bring car parts into the kitchen for a whole year. That should do the trick.

I was actually at home. There is no kitchen table in a frat.

                    There are however beezies.

Yeh, you messed up. You have to set a standard of the way you do things before you knock em up.

I make ok money... CNC machines are quite costly, having someone work on them is even more costly. When I was working for the last company I was at they charged 100-110 an hour for my services. I only got paid $17.00 an Hr., but they had some damn good benifits too. Wasn't a bad wage for a 22 year old!

Driving something that is paid for really helps.

i think it really depends on what you are doing. I don't think it is that cool to refurbish old brake calipers at the dinner table. messy at best. but rebuilding a gauge cluster at the dinner table is fine. no dirt there. plus you need a lot of light for that.
one thing you need to think about is your kid. you can not have small/dangerous parts laying around when that little fucker starts crawling around. might as well get in the habit of keeping the house baby safe now why you don't need to worry about some little drooling infant choking on a light bulb or speedometer gear. seeing those little fuckers go all blue in the face while choking is no fun. i have been there.

                              ps
those wheels are going to give me nightmares tonight.
