I got word from my dad that we had to put my dog down today. He was just as much part of the family as any of the human members. We got him when I was 9 years old. The guy used to sleep on the foot of my bed every night. He was extremely smart and extremely perceptive of human emotion.
Despite the fact that he was a family dog, he shared the closest connection with my dad and I. My dad always said he was "my" dog.
For the last few years he has been battling a cancer of some sort. He had been slowing down a bit in the last year or so, but his quality of life was still good and he was happy. Apparently 24 hours ago his health took a drastic downturn, and it was time.
I keep telling myself that it was in my dog's best interest and that we knew it had to happen, but it doesn't make it feel any better...

You will be missed. Thank you for your friendship and thank you for everything you taught me. I don't have all the answers, but I hope you are somewhere playing the best game of fetch you ever have.
