I'm real nervous about this happening to my dog.
She's old, but still energetic, but I know the time is gonna come sooner or later.
I don't know how I'm going to take it.

I had to put my best buddy Sergei (11 yo Golden Retriever) down last June. I cried like a baby, and am choking back a little now. It's hard but humane. Luckily I have lots of pictures of him, up to the day before he went. We have not replaced him to this day.

Is it bad that I'm more bummed out about your dog than I would have been if it was a friend of yours?

i didnt read thru the whole thread because i want to post.

i feel for you man and i am very sorry, my girlfriends dog, his name is oscar. he is also a scotish gentleman and he is in the same situation. Apparently scotties are very pron to cancer. He has prostate cancer and was only given a month. its been 3 weeks and he is doing great. we are just making sure he is comfortable and doing all we can to naturally fight the cancer.

these dogs are amazing and i dont think anyone can truely understand unless they have one in thier family. they more personality then most humans and are honestly truely gentlemen. knowing oscar is sick is like lossing a family member, but he will and im sure yours was the same, never let you know he is unhappy, just to make sure you are happy.

i am really so sorry, just be glad you had so many wonderful years with him, ours is only 8...

remember him sleeping at your feet and all the wonderful times. Again i am so sorry, i hope you are alright.

I cried a ton for Enzo (my cat) when I had to put him down a couple months ago. They let me spend a little time with him there before they took him, and I think it was just because I felt SO bad for him, but was so glad that he wouldn't be suffering anymore.

This is a poem a family friend sent when I had to put down my dog several years ago....

                      The Last Battle

If it should be that I grow frail and weak,
And pain should keep me from my sleep,
Then will you do what must be done,
For this, the last battle, can't be won.

You will be sad I understand,
But don't let grief then stay your hand,
For on this day, more than the rest,
Your love and friendship must stand the test.

We have had so many happy years,
You wouldn't want me to suffer so.
When the time comes, please, let me go.

Take me to where to my needs they'll tend,
Only, stay with me till the end

And hold me firm and speak to me,
Until my eyes no longer see.
I know in time you will agree,
It is a kindness you do to me.

Although my tail its last has waved,
From pain and suffering I have been saved.

Don't grieve that it must be you,
                      Who has to decide this thing to do;
We've been so close, we two, these years,
Don't let your heart hold any tears.

Guys, much thanks for the responses. It's been rather theraputic to read them. I wish I could have been there with him, but I got word as I was boarding a plane to Alabama.

After a night of sleep I am feeling a bit better about the whole thing. It is more obvious now that, despite the fact that it is painful, it truly was the right and fair decision for my dog.

I read your post and it made me thankful that our family dog is still alive and well. I can completely sympathize with the whole "member of the family" idea. I do not look forward to the day when our dogs time comes. Much like you, our dog Andy has lived with us since before I was driving even. Being a purebred Pomeranian, at 11 years old I'm afraid he may already be most of the way through his life. I can say his quality of life has been better than most humans, but that still wont make it easy when his time comes.

                          My condolences.

Sorry to hear that man. You have the right outlook knowing it's the best decision but it doesn't make it any easier. Cherish the memories that only man's best friend can give.

My cat Neo, who I have had for the past 16 years is looking like he is nearing his end. They don't think anything is wrong with him, that he is just getting old. I am not really looking forward to it. Sorry bud.
