Get an asus board, quality is bar none although currently I'm rocking an Intel brand board for my i7 920. Asus has a large range of options, but look at customer reviews too. Another big thing is different boards have different types of ram. DDR2 ram is considerably cheaper than DDR3 ram and will work for you, so try to find a mobo that has that. You don't need to go for a quad core for what you're looking to do. A strong dual-core like the Intel Core 2 Duo 8400 would work fine. -
do you need a dvd drive?
the acer aspire revo is crazy good. I have 2 personally. the run atom processors with and ion graphics. What that means is it does hardware accelerated graphics so you can run 1080p smooth. And it has hdmi. Total cost of the box is $199. oh, and it uses 64 watts of power :DLeave a comment:

Computer guys, hardware recommendations?
I'm going to build a Home Theater PC for the living room and most likely ditch the cable bill, but keep the internet.
I want a dedicated video card that that is HDMI capable (or DVI with an adapter cable), good sound card, strong mobo/CPU combo and 4gb of ram. I'll most likely run two hard drives, a smaller faster one with the OS on it, then a BIG one for media/pics/music/etc.
Can you guys make some good suggestions for "value" type stuff? I don't need the latest and greatest, just solid stuff.
Budget is $600-700 not including the case.
