    Things to do in Paris

My girlfriend and I are flying to Paris from June 10-18. The main reason why I am going is because we are heading down to Le Mans for the 24 Hours from the 10th to the 13th. And the other reason is because I've never been to Europe before.

So, we will have Monday through Thursday to go sightseeing, eat at good restaurants, and other fun things. She speaks pretty decent French, so we are ok there. We are planning on hitting all of the "touristy" places - Eiffel Tower, L'Arc, Notre Dame, Louvre, Champs Elysees, etc etc. However, this probably won't take all four days and we are looking for some other fun and cool things that we can do while we're there.

Have any of you been there before? What cool things have you guys done in Paris? Any good restaurants that you can recommend (keep in mind we are just out of college and don't have a huge budget)?

Any tips or recommendations would be a big help.

    Thanks
    -Joel

I had a girlfriend go to Paris for 2 weeks once and rode on the "sky-bus" or something like that? Got some great over-the-city shots of all Paris. I'm not positive on what it's called. Definately was one of my favorite spreads from her photo-diary.

Shit, that may have been in London.

you can get yelled at for being american. that was always the fun part about that city. Go to one of the parks and challenge some ol timers to a game of ping pong. Don't do all the touristy things because the real city are in the nooks and crannies.

You should hit up the Paris Catacombs for sure, that was one of my favorite tourist spots. The Louvre of course but if you have limited time, don't try and hit everything in there, make a plan for what you really want to see. It is way to big to see it all and you will be disappointed in the end if you missed something cool. Hit up a ride down the Seine, during the day you can see chicks on other boats topless but it is much cooler at night. You can do a dinner boat but those are really really touristy and not worth it in my opinion. Ask locals where to eat or just cruise around in the evening, the best places I ate at were holes in the wall and it doesn't need to be expensive to be amazing. If you can't possibly fill 4 days in Paris (you will) you can always do a day trip to Switzerland. Get up early and ride the train, it isn't very expensive, and spend the day there. You can be back by dinner time easily. The Latin Quarter is worth it also, you can find this tiny little shop with an enormous vat of oil that makes doughnut like things the size of your head. That is all I can think of right now, we went to a million places while we were there and most of them were unplanned so make some time for that.

Oh and not once did anyone give a shit that I was American while visiting, either they reserve that for people acting like tools or its just a rumor that doesn't really exist.

Um... wrong on both accounts. At the time i could speak french but they heard the american accent. It happened at the deli, some one asking for cigarettes, people on the subway and etc. I go there frequently because of family and i always seem to find those people. Not saying everyone is like that, but it still happens.

Well that sucks then, I haven't and nobody in my family that have gone has experienced this. I knew some French but it was pretty terrible for the most part and I clearly added in mostly English words to my sentences but everyone I encountered would switch to English for me. Hell, even the bum who begged for change from me everyday would beg in English when he saw me, still didn't give him anything but funny none the less.

Paris today, is a collection of dozens of towns/quarters. And everyone of them has some specificities inherated from 23 centuries of history (yes, Paris is 2300 years old). You can visit museums, Les Halles, Montmartres, Le Marais, Les Catacombes (as was mentionned). I suggest you spend a few evenings on the net, looking for what could interest you. Just walking in Paris, touching and smelling old stone can be fun.

Go to the train station and take the first train to Tuscany. Best thing you can do in Paris.

Steal some multi-milion dollar paintings. I hear their security sucks.
