SoCal - Prolly never happen again - 91 FWY content

    91 Freeway East at Lakeview
Friday, May 28, 5PM, Getaway weekend

For those who don't know, the 91 East is the freeway that takes Orange and Los Angeles County's traffic to Las Vegas, Lake Havasu and points east. It's typically a PARKING LOT, sometimes taking an hour to travel 5 miles.

That photo is a once in a life time - it was possible for Mark to take it because the 91 was shutdown (@ 6 miles from his photo location) in both directions - the following quoted from the OC Register.

"A tanker truck fire shut down the 91 freeway in both directions, creating havoc for thousands of motorists on a getaway Friday before Memorial Day weekend. The California Highway Patrol said a tanker hauling a fuel trailer crashed around 10:30 a.m. Friday on the freeway's eastbound lanes near Corona. (It's worth a look at the photos)

The 91 freeway was reopened late Friday night after a massive tanker truck fire forced the jam-packed freeway to a standstill on the getaway for Memorial Day weekend. The havoc radiated throughout the county, adding hours to already long travel times."

It is amazing no one was seriously injured.

That's friggin' sweet. I remember driving around on Christmas morning one year and most of the roads looked like that--nobody was on any road, including cops. Allowed for some interesting cruising speeds.

That accident and the one on the 57 caused mass chaos on all freeways/roads in the surrounding areas.

I remember having a picnic on the Foothill section of the 210 before it was opened in Claremont back in 2005-6. That was wild, after that, I don't think I ever commuted eastbound on that section under 100mph, it's insane out there.

Trip out on how clear the sky is as well, looks like a clean, fresh day.

Thanks guys, somehow I forgot to include that important piece of information; why the freeway was wide open. The crazy thing is that CalTrans diverted traffic off the freeway at Wier, which is two exits up from where the pic was taken (by my wife). Apparently, freeway signs as far away as downtown LA notified drivers that the 91 was closed. Everyone took alternate routes, leaving the 91 wide open from as far west as the 5 freeway.

Early morning on New Year's Day is the same way - no one on the roads at all. Kinda spooky.

We had rain a few weeks ago and some mild gusts about a week ago, so the sky was pretty clear. Normally you can't see anything a mile away. Are ya homesick at all?

It was crazy. From my office building I could see fire trucks and ambalampses trying to weave their way through the snarl.
