Dont go with a dslr for normal video recording. They can produce AMAZING results when used correctly but that really means having a full film crew. The lack of auto focus and the awkwardness of holding a camera while trying to video is horrible for normal stuff. Stick with a normal camcorder if you arent trying to direct movies

    heres more info

I use a d90 and only use it for video becuase its my workhorse still camera too, the video quality is good but its a pain in the ass.

        vixia, vixia, vixia.

Sony use to be the bomb when it came to video. There was a saying in the business "No one ever got fired for buying sony". Not true anymore. They been trading on their name for the last 10 years. But I think they are turning around.

The Canon Vixia will by far be the best bang for your buck IMHO.

DSLR are fucking god awful at video right now. They're not made for it. You can't hold them right. They often can't do video and zoom at the same time. It's a train-wreck. Don't even get me started about the audio.

BTW that XL1 is a DV camera. It's old, old stuff.

Fun fact: Most of the porn you've watched in the last 15 years was shot with either a sony VX-1000 or that cannon xl1.

i love this thing, i know its not exactly what youre looking for, but after you do get that,
whatever it ends up being, having this little 'toy' is excellent for experimentation and
making retro looking videos, and its so portable!

oh yea and its in your price range ;) about 160$~

            Bumping this.

So. I was leaning towards the Vixia. I was pretty much sold...

Then I stumble onto this. Sony NEX-VG10 Handycam

Haven't read any reviews just yet (The NEX-VG10 due out in September officially?)

But Sony's teaser site ^^ oh my. Now for me, it's not just some expensive toy that I'll put down in 3 months. I want to transition it from yes a hobby to real results. Professional results. If it was a tool added to my arsenal of tools would it be the right tool for me is the question I'm asking myself. I know it's not just about the camera, I realize anything I buy regardless of past experience with video and video editing will have a learning curve.

MSRP ~ $2000. Not cheap, but still considered "prosumer."

I gotta say I've been impressed with some of the 7D and 5D videos I've seen... but I agree the position to hold them just isn't optimal.

i have the panasonic and i personally hate it after using it for a few days i started disliking it more and more the quality of videos i get seem to not be so good most the time and lighting seems to be an issue a lot of the time with it.

                    The Panasonic TM700?

I read a review stating it was better than the high end Canon Vixia's in low light, etc.

Thus why I'm apprehensive about buying any of the pro-sumer cameras.

ya the tm700. i use it most for snow my ski season is 9months long so i use it 3times a week ive had plenty of time to mess with it, find out what works best for it.but there is always alot of funny reflections coming off of snow. which getting good clean shoots in snow is always hard. I feel like its lacking the crisp quality that should be there tho my friend shoots with the Canon VIXIA HF S20 and it is worth the extra 300$ you would be spending for the quality the size of it everything thats my take on it.
