The company I work for has equipped me with two fuel cards for my company car (you know - fill up, pass the card, drive off - cool thing to have). One for Statoil and one for BP.

Last question I got was "why is your Statoil card almost empty and BP still full??"

you aren't hurting anyone but the BP gas station owner by "boycotting" them. there's a 90% chance that the fuel sold at that gas station wasn't refined by BP, and they make almost all of their profits extracting oil out of the ground and selling it to refineries. By the time it's sold to a gas station, there's only a few cents a gallon profit left.

Don't know how's it in states, but here the profit of a gas station from gas itself is... slight. They make all the margin by selling hotdogs, sandwiches, car accessories, drinks etc.

But it's not a question of boycott. If I have a choice of getting gas at either Statoil or BP - I choose Statoil. My approach may be naive, but it's my damn choice, and I'll stick with that! :)

Yes thats just how a gas station makes all of its money, sure as hell is not on fuel. The govt adds so much built in taxation to the fuel that there is no room for profit on it. Its even worse in europe than it is here in the states.

As far as boycott of BP Nadno is dead on, we all could stop buying BP branded gas, it would not hurt them very much in the long haul, its not going to get rid of them. And 2 why would you want them to not make any money and go into receivership, and not be able to pay to close up and clean up the mess???? A crippled BP is worth nothing to anyone in the gulf or to the environment.

First off - this is going to become political at some point and should have be posted in the other forum.

Secondly, boycotting BP makes a statement, sends a message, blah, blah, blah. But it's more than that - BP is a "damaged" brand name, and I for one would LOVE, LOVE, LOVE to see the BP name removed from all those gas stations. So yea, boycott. Burn the station down. Don't buy gas there.

I know you think you're being super clever by having this bit of knowledge of where the gas actually comes from - but fuck it - it's about the brand. Kill the brand, and you'll send a message. Naw mean?

But in general - yeah - that's the case. Just go die BP.

what does the "brand" mean really though? nothing. you're pissing in the wind and shooting the guy who own's the station in the foot. what does your boycott of the gas station do other than make your irrational feelings better? nothing. And it's probable that the other gas station that you buy your fuel at is selling product refined by BP.

                            I'll take this one.

It makes absolutely nothing besides making my irrational feeling better.

My irrational feelings are very important to me.
