On the plus side, the movie industry is growing, and they have Sandia Labs, White Sands and Los Alamos. That's it.
    Good insight.

One thing for me, if I want to continue as a Technical Writer, I need to be in a city with a strong Tech/Manufacturing presense.

I have strongly considered moving into Public Relations/Marketing ( I have a Journalism degree with a specialty in Public Relations), but unfortunately it seems (in Tulsa anyway), I'd take AT LEAST a 20% pay cut to move back in to an entry level PR/Marketing gig.

Really, you can get past the Mormons, it takes a bit of adjusting, but in the end, they are a lot better than other religious groups to have as a majority for neighbors.

And, I've spent time in all the cities you listed, and, not to be selling Idaho or anything, but Boise is very nice.

Denver, ABQ, and, LV are gonna be very big, and 66% of those will be unbearably hot. Large populations, and much higher crime rates in those places compared to SLC/Boise.

I know my opinion does not really count for much in the grand scheme of things, I spent a lot of time (6mo.+)searching this country for somewhere that I thought couldn't exist after being surrounded by the 15,000,000+ people in Southern California. but I had the option to leave LA and go absolutely anywhere in the lower 48. Where did I end up?

Yeah, at this point Boise/SLC have a better climate, smaller, etc.

ABQ has LOTS of Tech companies and defense work (although who knows what will happen in the next few years part of the reason I'd like to get out).

Denver, not sure why it's on the list other than some of the burbs/tech companies

Las Vegas, the wife could make a killing there and I could possibly have an IN with someone very well known in the entertainment biz out there. So there is a possibility to go there for a few years make some good money, have a big resume booster then make the transistion farther north.

We wouldn't move for a minimum of two years anyway (don't want to pay back the tax refund and figure it would probably take us that long to make the decision/plan accordingly anyway).

If you are looking for techy places to consider Coeur d'Alene ID is a option, there have been a couple of decent sized Software development companies that relocated their head quarters there from CA a while back. Thats why its stupid expensive to live in that area to buy property, it brought a bunch of Californians in, but other wise the cost of living is not that bad.

The area alone is worth putting it on the list. I would say come up to the flathead by me, but there is no work at all, right now. Supposedly the one big techy company we have is going to triple its work force in the next 18 months but I dont see it happening. There is little chance for growth as right now its all tourist industry

I grew up in so-cal (19 years) and have lived in Utah for the last 7 years. I miss the beach and my extended family, but that is it. The weather is very pleasant. Winters are quite mild. Lots of snow in the mountains, but not much in the valleys (It usually melts off completely between storms)

Car scene is not very developed compared to socal or other places, but there are regular cars&coffee meets with some interesting cars that show up. Small local BMW club is pretty fun but seldom have official meets. The Utah BMWCCA is really gay. This months meeting is an Ice Skating meet (WTF?!)

Vegas is close enough to make a weekend trip if you want to go party.

If you like the outdoors, Utah rocks! Tons of awesome state and national parks, moab, arches, zion, etc. Good rock climbing, mtn biking, hiking, etc.

Miller motorsports park is a top notch racetrack with lots of good hpde's, time trials, and racing. Utah SCCA has a lot of active members and puts on some great events.

There is a very large manufacturing/tech field here

The west side of the salt lake valley is not as desireable as the easterly neighborhoods.

Sorry for the rambling post, hope it helps some.

It's not bad not bad at all. Lots of things to do especially if you like the outdoors your thirty minutes away from like 8 different ski resorts. And plus if your not mormon and you go skiing on a sunday it's like you have the whole place to yourself ha. Great place to live I love it .

Some utahns I've talked to are a bit bugged by the influx of californians (we've got to go somewhere though :)). Seriously, like 20% of my coworkers have moved here from CA in the last 10 years.

^ Agreed. Same goes for north of SLC on the 15 Fwy. When I first went out jobhunting, I had Cali plates, and they caused more issues than conversation. They don't like Cali folks outside of Cali for some reason I've learned.

There won't be anybody, anywhere that will have issue with an Okie like you movin' in.

I switched over to workbooks and Wranglers as quick as I could, the best method to avoid issues is to buy a good disguise.
