Anybody know anything about Lionel Trains?

I have a colleciton of "O" Gauge trains that I inherited from my father. Varying degrees of condition. Nothing is a perfect 10, but some pieces are a good 9.

I'm trying to find out what the whole collection is worth. Any leads?

I have a very large collection of O guage. Most cities have a modelers club with a central layout for members. Check your directory.

I guaranty one of the members will come to you and give you a value.

If they are vintage, even in less than perfect shape, they can be quite valuable, especially the full sets like the Zephyr and Santa Fe pieces.

Working mechanical diaramas and the big transformers are also very valuable.

Have it appraised at a model railroad show and then sell on consignment.

I grew up on Lionel. Although I don't know the exact value, some of the older ones go for pretty good coin nowadays. The newer ones that have gotten "plasticy" don't fetch the same premiums.

I figured, if my collection is worth about $5000 or above, it might be worth selling it. I could def use the money to help me move to Cali....

But if it's under $5k, then I'm keeping the collection, and hope to some day have them set up in my house.

Whether you sell or not, get it appraised. As others have mentioned, more vintage stuff will command more $. Good luck with it.

Depends on what it is. Original Boxes and instructions up the value. Complete sets can fetch a decent price. The late 60's "Super O" stuff is getting harder to find. Late 70's-early 80's "MPC/Fundimensions" era stuff is getting up there, especially the high-end sets
Try to get a hold of "Greenberg's Price Guide to Lionel Trains", it has 4 volumes.
eBay can be a good starting point

Lionel is very VERY collectible, and I have seen certain engines go for more then 5K
