Man, people make such a big deal. I know what I use, I'm a mac person, my 99 g3 powerbook works just fine for everyday use. And I'm not biased, I use PCs (3 of them) just prefer my powerbook overall. Plug and play usb, printers, cameras, itunes, iphoto, ichat, photoshop elements 2.0, toast for burning, I run ms office '04, vlc with divix codex, edonkey for downloads. I can run almost any file as a pc (and i could run every if i installed softwin), but still run all mac programs.
Not saying PCs are bad at all. They have their moments, I like my desktop for gaming and such. on topic- I have heard of the garageband, but never had it, maybe il check it out.
I think its pretty bogus to say you need a comp running linux to beat a mac. Mac's whole bit is they are simple, hassle free comps that can be used by anyone. And they're quick as hell
