My new car adventure, 1966 Ford Thunderbird

I thought I would post this up since it kinda breaks up the monotony of the euro scene. Here's a little back story on the car.

My great grandmother bought it new in 1966, my dad and uncle both learned to drive in this car. When she passed it was handed down to my grandfather who would drive it every now and again, it was not a DD pretty much never saw snow, and was parked in an indoor parking garage. My grandfather passed away back in March, and up to that the car had probably not been driven or run for a solid year due to his declining health. I've been meaning to get it on the road all summer, but have just not had the chance to toy with it at all. About 2 weeks ago my grandmother passed away so we are in the process of moving things out....

Anyways, the car has been in our family it's entire life. It has 41k original miles on it with very minimal body rot. I went to try and get it running the other day, but after airing up the tires and charging the battery I found that the carb seals have let go from sitting so long. Trying to crank it over just SOAKS the engine bay in gasoline. I've gotta dig in the back of my mind to figure out how to work on stuff this old, I spent a solid 25 min looking for the hood release inside the car....

I just ordered up a carb kit, point, condenser, plugs, etc to get her running again. Today I went out and pulled the carb and took a few pics. They didn't turn out too well since I can't really move the car (Pushing that thing by hand alone is tough haha) but the parking garage is soooooo dark.

My plan is to obviously get it going, which won't be too hard. Clean it up, thing hasn't been washed in who knows how long. Really just go to town on the detailing. Then try to drive it some before the snow flys. I don't know what we are going to do after that. I really don't want to sell the car at all, but at the same time we have absolutely no where to put it, I already have 3 cars... I know it's not worth a ton of money, but it has a lot of sentimental value to me.

Nice. Reminds me of "Thelma and Louise".

    That car is a keeper.

Brake harder. Go faster. No shit.

That thing is shag-tastic! I would never get rid of it simply because it has a family history. With you taking ownership of it, the car will have passed through four generations of your family, that's worth a whole lot in my book.

Find a way to keep it in the family, one day you will share the car's life story with your kids and pass the key on to them, then you'll realize its true value.

That thing is awesome! And MINT! Don't mod it, a collector will love it when it's running.

+fucking1, do what it takes to keep it in the family, sentimental value>monetary worth.

This car is awesome... When I was a little kid, my mom always ended up with early sixties Tbirds. Friends felt sorry for a single mom with six kids..... you know how most kids want a window seat, we always wanted the middle, cause those wonderfull electric windows would go down, but not back up... wasn't much fun here in the great wet northwest... But on a sunny day, those old birds would hit the open roads, back when the speed limit was seventy, and we would fly..... Man what a ride...
Don't ever let this car go, you'll regret it forever
                    and that backseat, there perfect;););)

That thing is awesome, my dad and I have been playing around with a 64 Galaxie. Their fun to drive around and cruise, but don't expect it to take a corner.

Just picked up the carb kit a few min ago. I ultrasonically cleaned the carb, and soaked it in cleaner over night, it's as clean as a whistle now.

I will reassemble it today and see if I can get the beast goin

I do hope you can keep it. Old cars like that are too cool to get rid of especially with fam history.

sweet. I have a 65. Its really growing on me. I guess its nice to have different kinds of vehicles. At first I just couldnt get into the boat like handling but the old schoolness of it and the attention it garners makes it cool to take out and just cruise. Youll love it
