The new one has occasional defects and a few tradeoffs. All things being equal, my iPhone 4 has a much nicer screen, better reception, and a FAR better camera than the 3GS. The tradeoffs are that it's best to use it in a case (although really, it's just not that hard to avoid bridging the antennae), and that the glass back is somewhat more vulnerable to breaking. IIRC, the current data show that the iPhone 4 is the most reliable phone (but also the most fragile) on the market.
Anyone who buys a 3GS because of the minor tradeoffs is, well, foolish. It's not worth $500 for an old phone. (And to be clear, you pay the full price in your AT&T bill.) Get an Android (as you have no doubt done, since you hate Apple so much) if you think it's that big a deal. If you kick the crap out of your phones, well, get something else.
Most people are very happy with the overall package. Is it best for everyone? No. Is it perfect? No. Does it do what I want? Yes. Do I recommend it? Yes.
