    Buying video camera

Im getting a video camera to record all the shit im doing this summer. I was thinking about this. http://product.samsung.com/cgi-bin/n...elTab=Features It is waterproof which is very useful. The extra camera should be very useful after summer once ski season comes around and its also nice and compact. I would really like to get one in the 500 dollar range since im really trying to save my money for my car. If anybody knows a good camera or of any cool features then let me know.

I do professional video work, and I havn't heard too much about mpeg4 recording. I believe they use even smaller tapes than mini DV - or can use card memory of what ever type.

I hate bastard formats like that. Try and stick to miniDV or digital 8 - unless tiny is the key for you.

If you can wait a few more years, digital still/movie combo cameras will hit the market that will take HDTV pictures. Much better.

In my business there is a saying, "no one ever got fired for buying sony products"

Thanks for the input. The camera has internal memory as well as a slot for memory card pro. The camera has awesome features and it is only a bit bigger than my cell phone. Im kinda stuck because even with all the features, the memory sticks only allow for minimal recording unless I spend hundreds to buy several. On the other hand I really want to stay away from minidv just because of the whole tape aspect. Ill prolly end up getting either the samsung or one that records on dvds.

What are you afraid of on the tapes of miniDV's? Do you understand how ridiculously good the quality of a good miniDV cam can be on those tapes?

Now a day 20% or so of stuff you see on TV has been at one point recorded on mini DV - or a simular format (professional DVCAM - just a bigger tape basically - up to 180mins)

The only downside to tape is rewinding. And the cost of buying tapes.

it's 100% digital. Oh, and digital 8 is the EXACT same quality.

Once you've used the GL2, there's no going back...

Cheap too. $2,400-$3,000 depending on optional equipment bought...

But seriously Sony Digital8's are the only way to go if you want to buy a solid, not as expensive camera. Just make sure they have firewire capabilites, most do.
