anybody know how to time a subie?

i've got a 2005 Subaru Impreza 2.5 rs. its making a funny noise which i think may be a timing belt tensioner. being that i see alot of subarus on here i figured id ask if anybody knew what the timing marks on the pulleys should be at.

    thanks in advance.

Uh oh. Subarus engines are famous for destroying main bearings. So first id try using a screw driver or something, hold it up to the block and heads and try to pin the location of the noise.

The tensioners automatically adjust so unless it failed, which i dont think is common, thats probably not your problem. How many miles are on it? And any service records of the timing belt or tensioner being replaced?

my buddy has a 99' 2.5 rs. he just bought it for 6,500 and its clean as hell found out two weeks later when i did a oil pressure test we got 4 lbs at idle! so were putting a new pump and redoing timing and while were at it and were hoping that's it because to do rod bearing the block has to be split in half let me know if you find out any tips casue ill be needing them haha

If it is a tensioner, it should be squealing its tits off, increasing with RPM.

Take the covers off the front of the engine, put the pumps/belts back on, start it and see if you can hear the noise.

Timing marks on the cam wheels/main wheel should all face up.

timing belts are fun on h4's

Take out rad. take off alt, power steering pump , and water pump .
take off cam gear cover , then you need to take off the crank pully ( hear its a bitch ) then you do the dirty work. GL

Was going to do this on my 97 gc8 with a ej18
