    Mountain bike techs?

Anybody here know much about mtn. bikes?

I have an older model (97-98?) Specialized Rockhopper Sport that I want to "restore". I am gonna strip it, blast it, and powdercoat it either black or red, and rebuild with better components.

My questions revolve around which components will fit, and best pieces for the money.

Upgrades: Frnt shocks, gearing-etc., disc brakes, wheels.

Any help here would be appreciated.

    1inch or 1 1-8th Head tube
Does your frame have disc mounts (forks moot point cause you can just buy some with)

I work on bikes as a job but its not a bike store (sports store) so I can help out a lil, but there are a few others on the board.

    Sold it.

I've been a bike mechanic for the last three years. If you have any questions about installation/repair, feel free to ask me. If you have a question about what parts to choose, ask someone else. I ride BMX, so I don't know too much about which of the MTB components are better. I would highly recommend a Cris King headset though. Great part, all of the mountain bikers like them. I even have it on my BMX bike (although I just snapped it. 10yr. warranty though).

Your best bet if you want to do a full restoration like that is honestly to get a new bike. By the time you get new wheels (for discs) and discs you are into it atleast $350 for decent stuff. For $500 you can get a decent bike with new crank, gears, derailleur (??sp). I ended up getting a new bike cause I would have spent more than the new bike after getting nice discs and stuff.

I love Shimano's XT stuff, seems to me more durable than the XTR simply because it's not so featherlight.

I have a Rock Shox Judy XC that I bought new and had an Englund air cartridge put in right after I got it, that I might sell for pretty cheap. Has a relatively short head tube though...not sure if that can be replaced with a longer one. (Was shortened to fit my 16" frame) It's in good condition, always let air completely out while not in use.

Ya, Im not a huge fan of Chris Kings in BMX applications, you have to be really smooth.

                          Sold it.

I need to sell one of my bikes. I have a '02 Trek 8000 and a '01 Specialized Rock Hopper. I think I'm keeping the Trek because its twice the value of the Specialized, but I'm not sure how much I could get for the Specialized. Sorry to jack the thread, just looking for a simple answer from a mtn bike specialist. Bought the Specialized for $700 new and rode about 25 times. Condition is near perfect. Any ball park figures?

MTBikes is how i starting mechanicking shit......now i do my e30.

for disc brakes, check your frame has mounting tabs on the rear, and your hubs are disc compatible (otherwise new wheels $$)

replacing the whole gearing system as one is best, as then everything is new...shimano xt is nice (xtr is pimp) but most of their lower end stuff is good, and cheaper. i used a rohloff chain as a courier.....they damn good.

its a cool little project...but as opposed to cars its often cheaper to buy new, as you get way better value for money as the bike companies can buy in bulk....so just check your budget and see what bikes there are round there new, so you dont waste a lotta mula

i love my MTB....hardly ride now but its so rangi..its great!...post some pics up of ya bike...makes a nice change to cars
