I am not the smoothest, but I am not the hack I was anymore either. My Tank headset suits me fine right now.
Ya disc hubs are money, but if you have the money go for it, a bike built up via your components and specs always feels better than a store bought.

I was a bike mech for many years. I know the love for the bike, I used to have a rockhopper I loved. I still ride and have at least 5 bikes on hand. If your going to upgrade, stick with the basics. Disc brakes is a bit of a reach, I'm almost positive you bike has no rear disc tabs. You can go ghetto style with the front disc rear V brake set-up, which really isn't too bad, I rocked it for a while. If your going to go that way, get the Avid cable disc brake for the front. It's cheap and it works killer. As far as components go. Get Shimano XT for most of it. It's light, works very well, and can take massive abuse. Go with Truvativ for a crank. Also good stuff. Don't go crazy with a fork. Your bike wasn't designed for a fork with tons of travel. That being said, I would keep the travel around 100mm or your bike will be all choppered out and will handle like shit. Manitou is making some great forks these days. The rest of the stuff is up to you. A lot of companies make good, affordable bars, stems, seatposts etc. Get a decent riser bar. Lastly, not enough can be said about tires. Get a good set. Something burly. I ride the Continental vertical 2.3's. They rock. If you have any questions or need and help, PM or email me.

Not much stuff is made for 1" anymore. You probably won't be able to get a good fork for it. I don't know what fork exactly is the best 1" fork, but I'm sure someone else will chime in.Originally posted by RCWellsI found out I have a 1" steering tube. What shocks would work with that, anything good?

1 inch. Super old school. I still have 2 bikes with 1 inch headtubes. One of them is a specialized. You can find some older stuff. I have a Marzocchi on my stumpjumper that's 1 inch and an old rockshox on my singlespeed. Basically you have to hunt for a 1 inch crown for whatever your going to get. You can find them for some older shox, but your going to have a really hard time finding an up to date fork that's 1 inch. Make the rockhopper into something fun. Have you ever ridden a singlespeed MTB? I think my 1 speed might even be a rockhopper. Are the drop-outs semi horizontal? Maybe your in need of a good beer bike. Good luck.

check out MTBR.com and ebay, i lnow Marzochi has some old school 1 inch steer tubes laying around.
i would not weld tabs for disc brakes on the back but there's a company that makes an adaptor that gives you Floating piston brake design.
I love mountanbiking and I'm currently hooked on Turners bikes.
have a 27 lbs burner, a 5 spot on the works, a norco atomik 35 pounder, a cannondale jekyll at 24.5 lbs and
a giant mcr2 roadbike that comes in at a hair above 16 lbs :)
she's a beut with campi record 10 sp and FSA carbon crank onto Ti bb :) she's so sweeet :0
there's tons of excellent componets out there, specially items from Truvativ like cranks, FSA has some good headsets but i stick to CK's,
a good ol set of Crossmax SL.
as per disc brakes, unless you go with Hayes El caminos or Hope's mono ti's i would recommned Avid's mechanicals. super easy to setup.
drivetrain, go for Sram, shietmanos are not that nice and i'm not happy with the xtr setup on the burner, all my others run Sram x.o's and wippermann chains.
Easton makes superlight handlebards like the monkey lites or step up to thompsons elite line.
supersweet :)
