I was 18, and had $1000 for everything, and I wasn't mechanically inclined at all back then, so I had to settle for something that worked well.
I found a 1993 Mazda Protege at a used car lot for $2000.
After a bit of bargaining I bought it for $700. Spent the rest of the money on transferring the title and paying the registration fee and the insurance.
I used it for two years, then sold it to a junk yard for $350. Never had a problem with it until the week before I was moving from Indiana to Cali, that's when it died... It was quite fun to drive, and the clutch took my learning of the manual really well!
it was a pretty shitty car, had electrical gremlins out the ass. and the transmission was weak as hell. suspension was less stable than a surfboard on calm water.
but i was 17, the ac was ice cold, the stereo was kicking (3 rockford fosgates driving 9 speakers and a bazooka tube), and it was convertible. in the summer, i loved it. i dont miss it at all however.
First car was an '89 325is, bone stock, salvage title, bondo cracking all over it, leaked water inside, but I loved that car. Thats why im trying to get another!
