Fire the flash at the end of the Shutter rather than the beginning ??
This will freeze the whole frame. It will get you a technically sharper image, but in my opinion boring. I like to fire the flash first, then be aware of how the ambient light will drag. If you fire the the flash at the end then you will overpower the ambient (aka the lights with color that you capture the mood) and the picture will just look flashed.
It comes into understanding how ISO, SS, and Aperture all come into play with the flash. ISO will affect the whole image, SS will affect the ambient amount of light, and Aperture will affect ambient and flash light.
Verdier did not use flash, but in my opinion the shots have the background in focus and the subject just blurry... I really like the first one you posted with the guy singing.
Sometimes I like to shoot with just ambient to capture the mood since I pretty much just shoot for my own sake of remembering my life. I know they are noisy, but iso 4000 f 1.8 and 1/80th is the best I could do. All things considered pretty damn impressive imo.
Also clayton, do you have any sort of stabilization? if im careful i can usually shoot as slow as 1/10th with out loss in sharpness, and lower the ISO.
On the flipside, the noise on those pics is pretty minimal.

Gotta remember intoxicated people move rather quickly... always want to freeze the motion. Those downsized pictures look like poo too, the normal sizes and w/o odd compression look a lot better. Also, the minimum shutter speed you can pull off depends on the focal length. If you can pull off 1/10th w/o stabilization at 200mm then you're somewhere between pretty damn good to nearly god like. If you can pull off 1/10th at 18mm then... me too. :)
And Sleeve, buy a flash and play with it. So much fun stuff you can do, and always more to learn. (I am a novice)
