I tried to go shoot comet PanSTARRS Friday night but there was a fog bank in the way. I figured I'd break out one of my rarely used filters and see what I could get. I over exposed this shot by about 15 seconds, then went back and increased the black levels and shifted the white balance around. The filter was a star filter. Its kinda cool, but not that cool. ;)

So who has tried light painting? Tried it out for the first time last night, and I have to say it is quite a bit of fun!

Hey, I'm down. You can sort of see the Bay Bridge lit up in that pic. The full sized version lets you see it much better. I'll be back out there again sometime this week hopefully to catch the comet. I can shoot the bay bridge with my big lens, rather than my 18-55mm that I shot that pic with. I can get a pretty sweet shot of the Bay Bridge if I drop down to Fort Baker and set up on the pier out there. I'll also catch Alcatraz in the frame as well.

i love light painting! super fun. sometimes its frustrating tho, like if you have too much ambient light for you subject.

Dude those shots are fantastic. How did you manage to not capture the person painting?

this was literally the week i first started playing with DSLR's so i dont remember it very clearly hahaha.
my exposures were around 10-15 seconds and i only painted for the initial 5-10 seconds.
my ISO im pretty sure was all the way down.
as for my aperture i can't recall but i bet it was near wide open.

for the lighting i just used the LED on my iphone.

for magical light effects i obviously pointed the led at the camera.
and if the shots needed any extra light i just momentarily shined the iphone light at the subject from above the camer.

but in the first pic you can kinda see the blur in the upper corner, the other pics werent as long of a shutter speed so you cant notice my arm at all.

Moon Sliver and comet PanSTARRS. The comet is very faint and off to the left of the moon. I couldn't see it with the naked eye, the camera could. Now that I know where to find it, I'll zoom in and try catching it.

I need a really clear sunset to get a good shot of the comet.

Lighting was not that great but I did manage to get out an get an ok shot or 2 the spring melt has started rather early this year. Came out rather dark off the lens so this has a little post process on it to lighten it up a little bit, I think I might have over cooked it just a tad though what you guys think???

It doesn't look too bright. But there is some detail lost in the whites. Also for some reason the comp just looks crooked to me a bit.

I really need to calibrate my main monitor (other expenses always seem to get priority) because I can't tell if the blacks on the car match the image or not. Some screens they do, some they don't, probably not good...
