Bwahaha.
Anyone else here remember AOL chat? There was a time when people started posting ASCII pics and the whole shit went crazy. It got banned later. There were people called admins that would boot your ass out of the chat room. Then I moved onto Yahoo chat and I remember something called Cheetah chat that enabled you to have like rainbow texts and stuff. There were tons of people in the teen chats. Cyber sex was the top luxury. A/S/L? On top of all that the damn modem kept screaming. That would be like 1996 and my first encounters. Then IRC chat, the hacker channels and stuff, astalavista, downloading an mp3 an hour and a half, full CD left to download over night. Websites that looked like utter shit.
Since I've been plugged for some 15 years, the largest difference in my opinion is that people don't want to be annonymous anymore. Back in the chat days, noone's nick was their actual name.
Oh and anyone remember the hype chat where you had a top view of people (like Hospital Tycoon or something) and you could do stuff. And you could buy stuff with real money. Something like a Second Life, cept version 0.01.

And I always thought that Bulletin Board Systems (todays Forums) were total crap and I never thought anyone would use them except some geeks that wanted to keep a history of their chats. I don't think forums really cought on until around 2003. I guess that would be associated with an opensource easy to use, noob friendly system.
