Get the V8, the V6s have the same fuel economy but less power. Supposedly you have to work the 6 so hard it ends up using the same gas as the bigger motor anyways.

When I worked for the dodge dealer in parts I would sometimes have to do parts runs if a driver called in sick or it was a rush. We had a couple of V-6 parts trucks and you were alway in it if you were trying to be or not. The gas milage sucked!

Get a V-8, the interiors don't seem to stand up to a beating so make sure it was taken care of inside too.

The Toyota trucks have a pretty solid reliability record.

I've been DD'n a 89 SR5 for about a year. Since my previous DD died.

Check out www.yotatech.com, its a pretty good resource on the toyota trucks.

The 4cyl 22R's are generally regarded to be really solid, but they still have a few issues to be aware of.

Mine is a 3.0 V6, they got a bad rep for HG failures. For the 90 model year Toyota changed the HG design on the V6, from that point until 94~95MY they had high HG failure rates. There was a recall on the HG's from 90 to 94 or 95 MY's. The early V6's 88~89 don't have the HG issues the 90+ models have.

The pick-up's and 4 runners are very similar, I think the 4-runners might have issues with the rear widow function.

The biggest issue to watch for is frame rust, run a search for "rust" on yotatech and you'll see the posts of guys repairing frames that have rotted away. Both the pick-ups and 4 runners will have that issue, Toyota did have a recall on the frames for rust, it ran from about 95~05 I think.

I've really liked my SR5, the motor is gutless but so far its been a great DD (not leaving me stranded or having to wrench on it all weekend to get to work on Monday). And its actually quite solid for a 20+ yo truck.

My last truck prior to my Dodge was a '86 Toyota 4x4. Definitely a very good truck and fun to drive around in and was definitely one of the best snow vehicles I've ever owned. When it was my DD, it wasn't too bad, but when I bought another DD and it became just a 'truck' its limitations became glaringly apparent. It was simply too damn small to be useful for much of anything.

When I was looking for a truck again 4 years ago, the 'no debate' option was it had to have an 8' bed since anything shorter would limit its primary purpose: hauling crap (in my case: fire wood, mulch and yard debris to the dump). The club-cab was insisted on by the other half... and while I don't mind the additional interior space, combined with the 8' bed, it makes for one long-ass truck.

With gas trucks, condition is more important than brand. I'm partial to Fords, but truth be told, when you're in this price range ($5K or so), it really doesn't matter as you can find duds in any of them. If it's a good truck (seems have been screwed together well), then it's a good truck. I wanted a '78/79 F250 and if I were to do it again, that's what I would have insisted on. Unfortunately, the other half wanted a Dodge... and a diesel... and a 5 spd... so that's what I bought... never mind the fact she never drives the damn thing...

I have an 87 4runner(2 door) that has never failed me. Picked it up for $500 and its a blast. I ran it with almost no oil since I never bothered to check for the first 2 months. It also does amazingly off roading for having stock 235 street tires

now that's a deal. :up: any pics?

are fuel and oil filters that much for a 12v ? everything for my 24v is 1/4 of that cost. I change my oil every 6 months, cost me about 60$ for everything including fuel filter.

I buy Wix and ONLY Wix. Oh and mine is a 2ed gen Duramax (lly)
