US House passes anti-flag desecration measure

I think this is bullshit. This is just getting another step closer to fucking free speech and an Orwellian-esque government.

It frightens me because i think it will pass in the senate too, and theres no way in hell Bush would veto that.

It's going to be a Texas vs. Johnson all over again.

it makes me want to get that speech from the president in The American President in regards to his girlfriend burning a flag in the 70's or something, i believe he defends her actions.

Texas vs. Johnson was the Supreme Court case dealing with flag burning. The Court ruled in favor of Johnson and against the Texas law preventing flag burning. If I remember correctly, the Court stated that it was freedom of expression through freedom of speech that made burning the flag legal.

What are you into burning flags or something? Want to get together and spray-paint the monuments this weekend? Maybe we should hang "fuck bush" signs from the Washington memorial....

If you are into burning the American flag, I hope you end up in jail.

ON second thought, just paint your car to match the confederate flag.. that’s a pretty cool thing to do in the south. REBEL AGAINST UNITY..

ya'll act like this is the first time this has happened. Its come up on multiple occasions in multiple venues, Sup. Court, States, etc. I highly doubt this senate will pass it. Much too much partisanship type bullshit, plus the patriotism garnered from 9/11 is waning fast in our government.

Although its not like it matters. people fight over ideas all the damn time. I personally wont worry about it too much.

He... maybe a bunch of these wanna-be-anarchist hippies will get arrested, sent to prison and get ass raped.

I don't think it would particularly helpful to make it an amendment or a law to prevent it, I don't get these people burning flags. With the rate at which they burn them, they are only helping capitalism by buying so damn many, and they are only doing it for shock value. Unless they are up in arms and starting a militia to wage war on the US, you can't be that pissed off at the US or its policies to burn a flag.

America, to me, is the greatest place on earth. And although Im all for letting people have their opinion (even though Im always right... jeez  ) burning the flag just seems like over kill. Burn someone in effigy... take some time to really get the wrinkles in a certain political figures forehead right. Show you care and burn it

I know I've been working for a couple years on my Hillary Clinton doll... gonna burn that thing good...

This is a minor issue. If you're going to be concerned about something, check out what the folks on the Bench did today, that has a far greater impact on our rights than flag burn/not burn does.

You don't have to want to do something to believe that it is wrong to outlaw it. Our country was designed around the concept that my right to say or do something should be unimpended until it interferes with your rights. That's the point.

What an outrage. I represent clients in eminent domain matters. Now the government gets to decide if someone else's plans for your property are "better" than yours.

We have a situation locally where a whole neighborhood was declared "blighted" so the city could take it and sell it to a developer for an upscale retail/housing project.

The kicker is - the "blight" was the streets and sidewalks were in disrepair!!!! The city created the "blight".

I concur with those who think the flag burning hippies should end up in jail. Lat time I checked we live in the best country in the world. With the best living conditions, the most opportunity. Why do you think we have an illegal immigrant problem? I dont see other countries sending American citizens back to the US all that often. The flag represents our country and all that it stands for. You dont like shut the fuck up and deal with it or get the hell out of here and move to Canada

All that our flag stands for includes showing your outrage at the government. When you go starting to say there are only acceptable levels of dissent, you will slip slowly into a very bad place. If you are unwilling to tolerate the dissenters (no matter how stupid they may seem to be) you do not truly understand or love the freedoms in this country.

dave has it right. besides, I take comfort in knowing the folks who burn the flag have problems that go deeper. But its a free country, unless a developer wants your land....
