Energy Stocks, Mutual Funds, Roth IRA, Savings and as of today my new e30 project (which really just consists of me buying an m20 before I get a shell - stupid landlord).

            stuff I don't do:
cash - negative interest rate and future high inflation. lose/lose. You only need enough to survive for a few months, beyond that you're better off elsewhere.
gold - it looks like a bubble to me.
bonds - nearly zero interest and same inflation risks as cash. I have a few in my 401k account, that I probably need to sell.
            savings accounts - see bonds

            what I do:
stocks - have had a huge run up from the 2k9 bottom. Who knows how far it will go, but I sell the losers, hold the winners, and save cash for the dips. I recently bought Tesla - they don't have any earings yet, but I'd expect them to either succeed or be bought out by a bigger company. Electric vehicles are definitely in our future. Pick your own stocks, don't listen to what everyone else is doing. For example, Skype hasn't made money, ever. Maybe you'll get lucky and make money in the IPO, but it will have a negative P/E ratio..
401k - I have them because I'm basically gauranteed a 20% return on my investment (company matching). also reduces my current and future income tax rates. But otherwise the investments are "meh". Merril Lynch managed funds.. blah. I do better on my own.
company retirement account - it's basically a trust fund. it's not a gauranteed payout, but I'll get whatever I've vested into. after 3 years I have about 9k in there. I could probably stick around here for 30 years, unless I get bored. I'll be fully vested in 2 more years. There is also company stock ownership.
509 - I don't want my kids to end up with 20k in debt after getting an education. I don't want to give them everything, but I have almost 20 years to save. My AMEX card also puts 2% of everything I spend into the 509 account - basically all my bills, gas, anything that takes AMEX. It adds up fast.

oh, and I own a house that I live in.

401k: Small Cap Index, Large Cap Index, Passively traded emerging markets fund
Roth IRA: Plan is to max it every year. Index fund
Discretionary: Stocks. I've been liking Union Pacific lately. I have my eye on a few speculative stoks as well.
Cash: Not having cash on the side is dangerous and reckless if you are in stocks. Also gives you the ability to leverage market timing.
