    mac guys

    Hey guys,
I have an newer intel macbook something or other white unibody thing that I like alot for personal use.

I'm thinking of buying this for my business:

This Mac has been professionally refurbished and includes mouse, keyboard and 17" Studio Display LCD Monitor. The specs are as follows:

    Dual G5 1.8GHz
    3GB RAM
    320GB Hard Drive
    DVD Burner
    OSX 10.5 Leopard
    iLife '06

To do accounting, website creation, watch youtube, listen to music etc. Would I be shooting myself in the foot by buying a non-intel mac (can it run snow leopard, new apps, etc?0, even if it is only $400ish? Any quality, reliability issues with the G5?

    thanks,
    Julien

I wouldn't buy a non-intel Mac, no reason to put any money into already outdated equipment.

For $400, you could build a PC that will out perform that Mac by quite a bit.

          This.

I like Macs, but that's not the right one to get.

If you can move your budget up to about $850 you could be golden. The sweet spot is the late 2008 models. That gets you Intel plus some other features that I cannot recall. I was shopping myself. I think better memory? 2.66 xeon quad core or 2 x 2.26. The thing will just keep trucking for a long time but have the ability to upgrade for a long time. My Mac Mini is 3 years old now and I'm going to put it at the office for accounting and day to day work. It's plenty fast for the employees just doing grunt work, but not for me.

Get an intel mac. A few friends of mine were using old software for their business and they are converting to intel only software/hardware, I have heard about that happening in a few fields. You will be safer in the long run with an intel one.

I would buy a PC but I really can't stand windows, especially windows 7. I guess I have to be on the lookout for a used intel macpro/imac

                  thanks for the input guys.

The dp G5's are very fast machines. I purchased my 2ghz dp G5 a couple years ago for $500 and have no regrets whatsoever. It has tackled everything I throw at it from family video editing to huge Logic Pro projects.

There are a few limitations to consider, one being the fact that the latest OS you'll be able to run is 10.5.8- Mac screwed all things Motorola by making Snow Leopard an Intel only OS. Also if graphics memory is a concern upgraded cards for these machines do exist but are no longer in production, making them tough to find and pricey.

The power supplies are the weak spot. I had to replace mine and it was quite the project as replacement requires gutting the case.

I'd say the machine you're looking at is prob. worth $250-300.

I would go with an Intel Mac without a doubt. Those are/were fast machines, however, as stated, you can only run OS X 10.5.8... You won't be able to software for very long. When Lion 10.7 comes out, software will be written for it and you would be left high and dry sooner than later.
