It depends what you value in my opinion.

Use both, see what you like.

I love my mac. I got it at the end of 08 and it's still serving me perfectly... and I love the design and ease of use.

i use mac only. in my case because i work with digital media which is what they are designed for, its just an industry standard. so i think it depends on what you intend to do with it. apples safari browser sucks a fat dick.

HP makes good systems and windows is compatible with a lot more software.you can get a lot more out of a PC you just have to be more careful with viruses and what not because its more prone to infection. soon macs will be the same way.

macs are not the greatest gaming systems. you can spec up pcs way better for that amount.

PC it , upgrades are cheap , newer comps come with better and faster ram/cpu's and its half the price. Ive got my 1st PC back in 1996 ( compaq ,OS was win. 95 ) it was the SHIT back the then and Ive been PC since. Macs are nice and look cool but everything cost alot. For what you pay for a mac could be a e30. PC's are cheaper.

I dual boot my macbook pro.
Snow Leopard for me and Windows 7 for the GF and her WOW addiction.
              Best of both worlds.

So you don't recommend do ya? Hmmm

With this in mind - you don't need anything special. ANYTHING out there will take care of the programs you'll actually use in college (FB, email, internet). Go to (your big box store of choice) and buy the cheapest computer that has a screen size you like and a big enough hard-drive to store all the iTunes you're gonna buy.

Then go and take the remaining $1100 of your budget and buy beer. Lots of delicious beer. And some fruity stuff for the girls.

And then throw parties and enjoy college. Girls like parties. Girls like getting drunk at college parties.

I bought my laptop last year, it's an ASUS G60JS.
Since I'm not a big gamer any more, I mostly use it for school and work, but it has enough GPU and CPU power to handle newer games pretty well.
Before I bought it I was told that ASUS laptops have problems with the motherboard, so I bought extended warranty, but nothing happened yet. And I love it. It cost around $1000, great value if you ask me.

The screen is larger than the usual 15.4", but the resolution is not as good as on my previous laptop. It had a 17'" screen with 1680*1050 resolution, which was really nice, so if I have to find a problem with this ASUS computer, I would say the resolution isn't good enough. But that's it, I don't really want to complain.

Sorry if I don't make sense I'm drunk.

I vote for what nigelsue said. If you don't have anything that you need, then anything will work. 1.5 k in todays market will get you good laptop but it's probaly more than you need. So spend less and save the rest.
a light will shine down from somewhere, it will light upon you, you will experience an epiphany, and you will say to yourself, "I have to r3v."
