    House flooded

Some major rain this afternoon saw the lower level of my house flood. I should have skipped after work drinks!

The wet / mud patches are totally random and there doesn't seem to be a single source of water.

What tips / tricks can r3v recommend to help me clean this sorry state of affairs? Bear in mind it's 10pm, I've had c. 6 beers and plan on switching to gin in about 5 seconds time.

Iain has sent me the awesome flood cleanup guide, but anything else is mucho appreciated.

More alcohol is definitely the correct answer. Deal with it, along with the hangover tomorrow.

Edit: Actually I'm voting for GG's solution over my own.

Like sleeve said, get the water out NOW.

Or the drywall will start soaking it up and molding/mildewing like crazy and then you've really got a nasty problem on your hands.

          I like GG's solution.

Get a bunch of those moisture packets out of new shoes from China and place them about your home.

But serious, that sucks, best of luck with it.

In all truth, this iswhat you will probably end up doing. The paper on the drywall WILL grow mold if its not completely dried.

But GG way looks sooooooooo much better.

how long has the water been sitting? how much water?

If it has been sitting there for longer then 48 hours turns to "grey" water which is considered sewage. Thus everything has to be tossed. If water is under 2 inches of water cut drywall out at 2 feet over 2 inches cut out at 4 feet.

It sounds like you just have seepage going on which would be considered "fresh" water. If it came from the drain then it would be a sewage backup which underlay and carpet have to be tossed. With the proper vac your carpet and underlay can be saved with in the 48 hr mark. If you have a gauge to tell you the humidity level your goal will be to get it too 60% the first day and will be considered dry at 40%.

Best thing to do is suck out the water with a vac the best you can and get air movement going in a circular pattern and get a dehumidifier going as soon as possible.

2'-4' up the walls cut out is your only real solution. Let the studs dry completely. I'd put fans on 'em if you got them handy.

I suggest 4' up the walls as it's much easier to place 4'x8' sheets of drywall on the walls and then mud accordingly.
                      Need a part? PM me.

He may have to replace the sil plates(bottom 2x4) if it is not pre treated wood or does not have a vapor barrier between the concrete and wood.

And why would he replace 2' of drywall if not needed he will just double he rebuild cost. Measure from 24.5" from the bare ground when cutting drywall to allow for .5" gap at the bottom so drywall is not touching the concrete

                          Ah, he's on slab then?

You can do 24.5" high but, depending on long the water has sat at 10" high it'll be up into the rock quite a ways.
