    Insurance Money

Hey guys. So here's the deal. I got read ended awhile back. I went to a shop that a friend of my dad owns. They estimated the repairs to be 1300 dollars.
I was just going to get it repaired because I thought thats all I could do.
But the guy who runs the auto repair part of the shop told my dad I should try to get the money for the accident instead of actually fixing it.
I would love to do this as there really isnt much damage and the car isnt worth very much anyway. Its already salvaged.

He told me to call the insurance company (AAA, both me and the guy who hit me have AAA) and pretty much just ask.

I was wondering if any of you have done this? Is it possible?
    Anything special I should know?
    thanks

Yeah I figured. I was just wondering if there are any laws against it or laws for it.

In San Jose? I don't think so. You can request that the work be done at the shop of your choosing. You might have to argue with them a bit though. At which point, they might just cut you a check. A Lawyer helps when dealing with insurance though. Keep that in mind ;)

Just call and tell them you would like a check so you can do it yourself on your time. No problem with that. I've done it 3 times in 14 years all with State Farm.

Yeah everything in san jose is more difficult haha.
Yeah I dealt with the whole shop of my choosing and picked one.
            Ill try arguing a lot
What If I bargained with them?
It is 1300 dollars, what If I said cut me a check for 1100?
I would only do that if they said it wasnt possible.

First off they bare not going to cut any check to anyone without their adjuster/appraiser looking at the damage first.
They won't just send out what your shop says unless the shop is part of their DRP program.

But anyway its your choice to fix you car or to spend it on hookers and blow.

Once the amount is finalized they usually cut a check made out to you and the shop.
You can request to have the check made out to you and sent to you so you can take it where you like when you like.
              No problem really.

Its a AAA approved shop. Not part of the DRP. They have already taken pictures of my car and approved the shop to repair. All I have to do is take it in.
I have different plans for the money haha

Yeah that's what I would do. I know that with progressive they just cut you a check and your free to do whatever the fuck you want with it.

i wouldn't even consider asking for anything less than the original quote. i wrote estimates at a toyota and volvo certified body shop in colorado for a couple years and rarely did an original quote actually cover all the damage. almost always had to request supplements. it will most likely be in the insurance company's best interest to cut you a check for $1300, as 9 times out of 10 there is hidden damage/costs, and i bet the adjuster is well aware of this. just ask!

the night before i left for my freshman year of college, i got rear ended in my 9-3. even though i was in a different state then where the accident happened, they sent an adjuster to my dorm to write an estimate. i told them i wanted to wait till i got back to colorado to fix it, he said no problem and sent me a check.

                          ^ yep.

i cant recall how many times the insurance company (at least half a dozen) has had to write my body shop a supplement.

There's the damage. You probably can't even see it. It was a low speed collision. Just need a new bumper (maybe), trim, straighten out the valence, bumper shocks and all that junk.

Doesn't look bad at all from here.

However those kinds of impacts on e30's can cause driveline problems even crack or break trans mounts and trans mounting ears as well as engine mount damage.

Really depends on the speed of impact.

But that being said , probably best for you to pocket the $$ and pull put your valance by hand.
No need to worry about the shocks if the bumper is sitting right.
