this is a rather odd story that I thought I'd share. A couple weeks ago I had Friday off, which is also payday (every week, which kicks ass), but I decided to wait until my next shift to pick up my check. When I got there on Saturday to get my check it turned out that somebody else (with the same first name) took my check and cashed it, and even worse it was in our store!
the store gave me a money order to cover the lost check, and I believe the kid was fired. His story was that he didn't realize it wasn't his check, but he had to go into my file to get it (which has my name on it) and my name and address are plastered all over my check. Also, he was a new hire working 20 hours a week, I'm almost journeyman working 40+ hours a week, so my check was obviously way too big to be his. Also he had to sign the check so I have to wonder what name he tried to sign. In any case I didn't care that much as I got my money and I had no hard feelings towards this kid (who I've never met).
Now the wierd part. A week ago there was an accident where some people got hit by a train, there's all kinds of trails and paths around here that cross the tracks so it's not a big surprise. however it turned out that this kid who stole my check was one of them, and he ended up losing his legs to an amputation!
I don't really believe in karma or anything like that, but that is a hell of a coincidence and it wierded me out when I heard it. I feel bad for the guy, and I'm sure he really regrets his decision from a week earlier. if he hadn't taken my check he might have been working instead of walking around drunk on a railroad track!
and for the lesson of the day: don't steal my paycheck or you'll lose your damn legs. ;)
