WTF, my wireless shit is fucked up. Road Runner cable modem and a Netgear whatever 802.11G wireless router. 'net works with cabled directly to the modem, and when I hook up the wireless router, all the appropriate lights come on. Wireless network shows up and is connected on my comp (gateway running XP), but no connectivity, what gives?

I've got wireless on my desktop at home such a POS.

Try installing all stuff that came with it. Drivers on the cd. Mine was really pissy and wanted the software loaded before I plugged it in. Directions that came with or... bust?

shows up? does it say it is connected to it on your XP?
        what's the signal strength? good?
Do you have norton or similar with a personal firewall? THIS was the problem on my and sister's comp. Make sure you are not blocking traffic with that.
        Do you have security setup?
Is the WLAN light lighting up on the router?

I'm really a comp. intern, but don't know shit. But I try.

And before you check all of that....

Did the wireless ever work? It's possible you need to register your router's mac address with your cable provider. That, or if it can emulate your NIC's mac address, you're set.

If that's not it, check to see if you get signal, if you do, check your IP address. it outta be something like 192.168.0.# if your router is providing DHCP. If it's like that, check the gateway, it outta be 192.168.0.1 if your router is providing.

          Then go check software.

worked until this afternoon, then caput. XP is showing excellent signal strength. checking on my security stuff.

edit- its gotta be software related, i just cant figure out exactly what though. The comp has a built in wireless car, so no drivers for that. The router doesnt have any either, it just picked it up fine when I bought it.

This sucks, I only have a 5' cable.

This definately sounds like a software config issue seeing it worked fine before it took a shit on you. I used to have a Netgear 802.11B wireless router....worked ok, but I had a similar problem happen to me. I re-installed the software to wipe out the settings and just re-config'd things.

About a month ago I chucked the Netgear router and picked up a Linksys Wireless-G Broadband Router. Its 802.11B & G compatible. Setting this thing up was a snap and signal strength is much better. No regrets making the switch. NewEgg.com had a sale on them and I couldn't resist.

                  XP SP2, right?

Unplug the router, let it sit for a minute, plug it back in to "reboot" it. Are you currently running a wep key? Make sure you have it properly configured in your XP2 SP2 wireless configs.

+1 - we have one and have no/very minor issues - only time i've had a problem with this router is if i end up picking up my neighbors wireless on ocassion when i'm sitting on my balcony. Good setup.

                          *> Netgear.

The bonus of the Linksys is Cisqo markets their really shitty routers with similar software so you can install it and go apemonkey on your router.

Rob, like charlie said check security configurations, although if your WEP key is fuxored then it wouldnt/shouldnt connect. I dont know much about Netgear since I dropped them a longtime back but find a status console. Then you can atleast confirm that it is, in fact, pulling proper IP and DNS datum. Maybe renew it if possible. Also can you change the WANs mac? Like if you were holding an IP statically when the network frowns upon that, they can ban your MAC addy if you pissed them off.

well I can connect to my neighbors linksys network no problemo, so it must be the Netgear shit. Time to go shopping I guess...

Care to elaborate? What's wrong w/ Linksys quality, and how can installing 'similar' software allow me to go apemonkey on my router?
