Just wondered how many R3ver's worked for BMW as a technician and how they like it. Also wondered if and where you went for your BMW specific training. I will have my 2 year degree in auto science soon and was wondering what my next step should be.
Any bmw mechanics on here?

The dealership I work at doesnt give two licks about UTI.
If you are ASE certified with a couple good years in at a repair shop or a midas etc, that looks 10x better. Either way, you still get brought on as an apprentice mechanic for a certain time period before you start on an advisor's tech team.
Sad but true is the fact that the people hiring you dont give two shits about brand loyalty. They are there to make money, and BMW as a brand is good at raking customers in. Therefor all they care about is that you can work, and work efficiently. The fact that you went to a BMW specific school makes you look like you are a fanboi to some and not interested unless you already have some real world time under your belt.Last edited by Van Westervelt; 06-05-2011, 08:15 PM.sigpicComment

I'm ASE certified in a few things. & Thats funny, because all of the new techs at a local BMW dealership are out of the BMW step or fast track program. sure they dont care about uti's core program, but the advanced training is respected.sigpicComment

It really depends on the GM, the shop foreman, and the service managers mind set. The ones where I work at drive corvettes and porsches. They are there for $$.sigpicComment

My father has worked for BMW dealerships since he was like 27. He hates it now lol.
But hes very good at what he does, and makes pretty good money with it now, so it can't be all bad. For new techs, he usually says they have ASE and experience.

ASE tests suck dick. I hate the way they word the questions so they can have multiple "correct" answers.

This is good to hear. I have three years experience working at a independent shop and have become very efficient and fast with the wrenches. Passed my electrical and brakes ASE so far and will be taking more soon. The dealership I work at doesnt give two licks about UTI.

I am a UTI grad and went to MB elite training. UTI isn't as bad as the rep it gets, as with everything there are a lot of really stupid people that participate. Like any school you get what you put in. As far as being specifically trained, in a specific brand, if you get into a dealer and they like you and you do a good job they will send you to training. On another note dealerships are not all they are cracked up to be. I am at an independent now and couldn't be happier.sigpicComment
