Well, I never thought it would happen to me

I got busted for bit torrenting.

There isn't much else to the story. I'm not sure how they found out actually. I don't know how that kind of shit works. Is there an online sort of paper trail? I'm not an expert when it comes to computers so maybe I should have been more careful... but is there such a thing when it comes to illegal down loads? Its on or off, yes or no. Fuck.

I was notified by my ISP, that they were notified by NBC about my download. (Singular) The email said that someone at my location had downloaded and possibly distributed the movie Little Fockers. They said that by doing that I was breaching the terms of service and this was my warning.

So far they haven't pressed charges or anything serious but I'm still really sketched out because I've downloaded a fuck load of music and movies over the years.

I'm not really sure what to do, besides share the story with you guys.

        1. Don't post about it on the interwebs
        2. Remove all HDD and buy new ones don't want anyone getting a hold of those.
        3. I am hearing more and more about people getting busted or notified I am some what concerned now.

The fact that you don't know how they found out shows exactly why they did. If you would take the time to educate yourself, you wouldn't be doing what you are doing.

There really is no need to worry though. They send literally millions of those out every day and nothing ever comes of them. It's just a simple email and it's purpose is to scare people. Regardless, you should definitely stop using public trackers. Public means that the entire world, including NBC, has access to the torrents that you are downloading. They seeded the torrent themselves, and logged every IP (Your IP is the anonymous address to your personal computer network) that connected to it (which is thousands if not millions of different IP addresses). They reported your IP to your Internet service provider and your ISP is required by law to notify you. If you stop seeding that torrent, you most likely won't hear anything more about it.

No one at NBC has any idea what your name or address is and they will never know unless they for some reason decide to make an example of you and subpoena your ISP and take you to court. It's like a one in a million chance.

            ^^^ listen to the man

Nothing will happen to you the first time or second. I don't know about the third time. Some guy I had class with once was talking about how he was warned by his ISP a few times, nothing happened except for his internet speed was decreased due to a breach of contract so I wouldn't worry about this. Just make sure you go do your research on how to protect yourself while dling torrents.

google: PEERBLOCK and dl it. There are a few other good ways to reduce the chances of you getting caught if you search online.

I actually got sued in college along with 50 other people. It wasnt using torrents, but a program called i2hub, and I guess the RIAA got our information from the university....at the advice of my lawyer we all settled out of court, and if we hadn't theres a good chance we would still be in litigation now, some 7 years later...

I love the South Park where they get busted for downloading music illegally.

Obviously you're an idiot in many regards. The first thing I'd do is start wiping my drives clean adn start over and go buy shit like normal non-thieves.

I guess its cool for you to cache your story/admission of guilt into Google too! Great job!

So....what if I have a shit load of CD's (Yeah boy! 2001 here we come!) and I bought and paid for them, hardcore. I'm talking like over 500+ CDs.

Most are scratched and messed up due to hardcore usage.

I want to put said music on my Ipod. I do NOT want to pay for it again, plus, the scratches, etc make for bad tracks (yes, they will transfer over into digital format or whatever). Thus, I DL torrents, free, and put the songs on my Ipod.

                              Problem?
