Anyone else's dad used to be a sailor?

Well I wish he was my dad. I moved in with my boss when my mom started being a biach the day I turned 18. That was seven months ago.

Any way my boss owns Precision Motorcars, a small Euro car dealership and service shop. I detail cars there and keep the sale cars clean.

We were having a father-son type talk Saturday because I told him I would be going to college in January.

I want to do what he did at my age though. When he turned 17 he started sailing with crews and winning regatas. I think he did it for 12 years.

This was back in the 70s, but he tells me I could still do the same thing. I am heading to Fort Lauderdale in July, or whatever month my first semester is over...

I used to race locally on a J boat, I was the foredeck guy. Good times.

I really would like to get back into sail boat racing..man it was a blast!

You could do it through your college. Two of my cousins went / go to University of Michigan and they were on some kind of sailing team for the school. ...but if I were you I wouldn't opt for sailing in Michigan...brrrr. :)

We take the Johnson 18 out and really get moving. I actually almost dumped it! Going down wind with the spinicar up, which I was triming, I got the rope wrapped around my hand. the wind was killer! I was really straining to hold the bitch, when another huge gust came up. We were in the remains of the last hurricane, WOW was that an awesome ride. I could not let the sheet out quick enough and we were completely perpendicular and digging into the water!!!!!

TJ's (the guy who I wish was my dad) wife (who is HOT) almost did the same thing, but I was able to help her save it.

This only lasted about 30 minutes, I want to do it when it blows for days stragiht!!! like on the ocean, not just Lake Lanier!!

My dad was Chief Engineer on a merchant marine ship for a while... He also worked for Sulzer doing engineering work related to where in the hull the engine would be placed on new ships.

I am going to college, but I may decided to sail instead.

don't say it is dumb because TJ grossed 24 million in a venture two years ago.

I don' t want to be like my real parents, and most of the rest of the world population. I hate working for others and the damn 9 to 5.

I didn't know there was money to be made doing that. What is a sailing venture?

My father did. (raced competitively for 20 years)
My grandparents also used to run a charter sailboat from the US to the bahama's every winter. Good money to be made there, but you need your Masters cert.

Ventures in sailing can be very risky... you can strike big or bust. No promises in a venture.

If you want to be smart about it... stay in school for both semesters, sign on as a crew member for summer. do that for 4 years, you make good $$. While you're crewing you have no place to spend the $$, so you save it all, and learn a LOT in the process. Obviously "crew" doesnt mean be a deck boy on Carnival Cruise.

was an automotive venture. he had contracts with five buyers. he sold 150 to 200 cars per month. don't know much about the rest of the math, did not know him then.

point being, I want to go do it and he is my sucess story...

i think UNHCLL has the right idea.

                        Also, FWIW...

                        He may have GROSSED $24M
but I bet NET profit was WAY lower.
Old trick... state gross profit, and "forget" to remove all debts, which would give you NET profit.

Look into programs offered by your school too. For example: Semester at Sea via Woods Hole Oceanographic institute. You can pick from 5 different "trips". Pricey, but well worth it! and its school Credits!!!! You learn sailing, navigation, etc. etc.

I have a STACK of their Lit. sitting right next to me. One of my biggest regrets of college was/is not doing this. (Senior this year... cant do it now)
