Wife wants an eReader thing, which one should I get her?

My though was the Barnes & Noble Nook color and root it.

Is there a better solution in the same price category?

I'm not dropping $500+ on an iPad, tablet, etc.

She wants an eReader and that's what I'm asking about, hence the title of the thread.

We both have EVO 4Gs, but don't use them to read, because of the small screen.

Why root a nook, such a puny processor.

The kindle is pretty crazy good. Simple and effective

If you just want an ereader (for books) then the Kindle is the best and only option to consider. I have a tablet with the best screen on the market (think iPad but higher res) and when it comes down to ease of reading, working in sunlight and battery life the kindle gives you the closest experience to a paper book.

Its superior to the rest because of Amazons market and the fact that they have apps that can view books and do all of the funcitons in any ecosystem.

For tablets they do more, I wouldnt get the Nook. It, honestly, sucks at both. Its slow on android and the backlit color screen sucks as an ereader.

I love my tablet, I read on my tablet, but I dont read at the pool with it, its hard to read on the bus and it doesnt get a week of battery. Being said it does more than books. Anything with imagery is far superior on a tablet. Amazon can show 2-bit versions of images but if you need greater detail and color (think charts or magazines) the tablet screen is also better.

But then, of course, there is everything else a tablet can do. Play movies, browse the web, create content, etc.

Just to clarify to back up my statements: I have an ASUS transformer, best friend has an ipad, girlfriend has a kindle and step-mom has the nook. So I have used all of these devices.

Edit: Get her the lighted case for the Kindle. It should double the frequency of blowjobs with its awesomeness. Also, you could save some money and get the ad supported kindle. The ads are pointless, they show in the bottom of the menu and the screen saver so they are really, really easy to ignore.

            Hmmmm, the Transformer looks interesting.

If I wanted to step up that far, are there any others that I should consider that aren't the iPad? I hate iTunes and so refuse to have any Apple products.

I love my Transformer. Its currently the cheapest option but its got the same guts as the Xoom and the screen of the iPad. Honeycomb isnt polished but ASUS has been only a month behind the Xoom WRT updates, really on the ball.

The party piece though is the keyboard dock. I have it and use it for personal travel to not take the big laptop. It basically turns the ASUS into a full fledged netbook, but a netbook with 16 hours of battery life and a touch screen.

My gf got the nook color, she loves it. I just loaded 4000+ ebooks onto it. She's pretty happy with it so far.

A tablet can be had for much less than $500. IIRC, OfficeDepot sells one for $199. More capability for little extra $.

Kindle 3G. Absurdly thin, can read in broad daylight, battery lasts forever, tons of books, free internet anywhere, etc.

For reading, you can't beat a kindle the e-ink screen makes it really enjoyable and easy to read like a book and the battery can last you forever, even longer if you don't have wifi/3G on. The only thing I would suggest on top of that is a hard plastic case for it as the screen is very easy to break, I'm already on my third one and haven't dropped any of them.

Also have a transformer w/ keyboard dock, it is a really great device, but I would not recommend it for an e-reader substitute.

Cool, thanks for the input guys.

I'll make her clarify whether she just wants to read, or if she wants the extra functionality.

They do, yes, but its a piece of shit with antiquated hardware running antiquated software.

for cheap the best way to go and have a decent tab is to go with a Nook Color and root it.

I really really want a xoom, but I am not going to spend more than 400 bucks on one, so I am just gonna wait till a good honeycomb device is below that and then get one.

I would go with a Nook Color and use the CM7 on it. Then you can have the Nook reader app as well as the Kindle. Plus you have a mini tablet to play with :)
