If you are looking for one that is relatively inexpensive but still has great reliability, library, and customer service.. I would go with KOBO. Got my gf one and she loves it!

Froyo isn't THAT old...it's not Gingerbread, but root it and load CM7 on it and you are good to go if you need the newest software. And the OP is looking for a ebook reader...which comes with the $199 tablet at Office Depot. (it's also sporting a 800x600 display...which isn't SUPER, but it's $200...right?) The hardware is a little old, but the Nook Color (for example) only has a few mhz up on it...and it costs more. I'm not saying it's awesome. Just saying that for $200 you can get a tablet that will read books as well as a kindle or nook.

Kindle. I got my gf just the wireless version this winter so she could save some money on books for class - she loves the thing, and the battery lasts forever.

I've never owned any of these devices, but have used iPad and Kindle quite a bit.

If I was solely reading I would get a Kindle hands down. The e-ink screen really is awesome for reading.

[I know you don't want an iPad, but I'm using at as a comparison for a full led color display]

One of the best benefits of an eReader is the e-ink screen. The Nook Color just has an LCD screen, so while it makes an excellent tablet for the price, it is just that - a tablet that can be read on.

I've personally handled the current-gen Kindle and Nook, and I have to say I preferred the Nook. The newest version (the touchscreen one) has firmware and software optimizations for the screen, drastically reducing inter-page flickering (when you change pages, e-ink inverts the colors several times; this is reduced by the newest Nook), which also speeds up the page change times. Similar is the newest edition of the Kobo eReader, which has more support for ebook formats but is not as quick changing pages, as well as severely limited bookstore support.

In short: Kobo if you have or want books in open formats and want a simple device that will read books and do nothing else; Kindle if you want a massive library to buy and hardware buttons rather than a touch screen; Nook if you want a touch screen and a massive library to buy from.

I'd grab a kindle any day of the week. Everytime I see my dad's I end up playing with the damn thing for hours.

I've had my Kindle for several months and love it. 3G is handy when away from home.
