No you can tune for a good mostly smoke free high power. You will get a big plume at first as the turbine is spooling but its very short lived if done right basically a puff and it cleans up to mostly a lighter gray. Smoky tunes are like that strictly for the show, its nothing but a bunch of unburnt fuel going out the pipe.
Thats why if you watch the pullers (supper stock tractors in particular) they are thrown a jet back plume 40 feet in the air as they spool up and until the have a load on them most of the fuel is unused. Yeah mine has a touch of coal when I smash the go pedal, until it spools than its off we go. Injectors a are couple of ignition cycles ahead of the boost in cases like that, even stock.

I was at the track the night this truck broke it's previous record. Drove my bone stock eta to KY and was a few cars behind them. Got out of the car to watch, so did everyone else after seeing their first run where the truck literally jumped to the side 3' on the launch and had to let off.
