My parents own a few homes they rent out to tenants. When a person moves out, I move in to do some repair work, paint, etc. A few weeks after a tenant moved out, I moved in to do some necessary repairs. Last Saturday, I had a few buddies over to have some beers, play some xbox and just bullshit-my parents had no issue with this.
Well... The neighbors called the cops, thinking the house should be vacant and that we were squatters. My buddy goes out to smoke a cigarette, opens the door and is face to face with an officer. My buddy shouts my name, but the cops go ahead and help themselves in my home.
I immediately walk over, say "I'm Ross Sullivan, my father is the owner of this house and I do NOT give you permission to be in my home, let's take this outside." The cop laughs, and says this house is supposed to be vacant and that we were trespassing, breaking and entering, etc. Next thing I know, cops are ransacking my house, kicked over a paint bucket on hardwood floors by accident, track their muddy fucking boots over freshly laid carpet, and kick down a door to the back bedroom where my buddy was nailing his girlfriend. They told him to open the door, he said "hang on" (so he could put his pants on) and BAM. Door off the hinges.
Finally they let me call my dad-who had to drive 45 minutes to the house to basically tell the officers to get fucked. This was some bullshit, protect and serve my ass. They should have used the least bit of common sense-instead of acting out of impulse from some bullshit call from the neighbor. One of the cops basically told me I'm SOL and they aren't responsible for damages during a search.
Cliff Notes:
-parting at my parents empty rental house
-cops thought we were squatters
-entered without permission
-ruined a brand new carpet and hardwood floors
-kicked a door down
-SOL
Well, looks like I may be screwed out of damages to my house, but my mom's filing a claim anyways. I won't be going down without a fight.
#endrant. I know, I know, cool story bro.
