Non e30 stuff. Lancer Evos opinion needed.

    In before Ricer.

Now that's out of the way I am thinking of picking up an Evo8 to use as an autocross car in STU.

Anyone experience with them? Or the Evo 9.

I have experience of the Evo7 with 400bhp. I found it was as brilliant as the Subaru Impreza in every way, but the Subaru for turn in and the noise made my choice. I'd go Subaru Impreza WRX STi everytime (its also the car I learned to dtive in too). Evo's are rarer and more expensive but truth be told the Subaru is a better car all round even though they are as good as each other. I'd go for a Subaru Type RA with the Prodrive handling package (bilstein dampers and eibach springs) and get magnesium brembos and you have a killer track car better than any Evo. Ok I'll shut up because we know where I'm going!!!

all i know is my friends evo 9 is fast as crap and handles really well, i love that car.
i also think the 9 is the most aesthetically pleasing but that has nothing to do with this.

Mitsu couldn't figure out how to install an engine the correct orientation. Fuck that.

        Scubie all the way.

Evo's are great fun. Get a good clutch though.

what are some common things to look out for with evo 8's?

Evo 9 is the more competitive car in STU over the Evo 8.

That said, it looked like there were a number of Evo 8s that won top spots at Nationals this year and in the past few years.

As some others have said, if you are looking at an Evo, stock up on stock clutches, you'll need 'em. Too bad STU doesn't allow upgraded clutches. :(

A good friend of mine bought an Evo 9 to build into a national-level STU car. His build is here which may be of some interest to you: http://forums.evolutionm.net/motor-s...ld-thread.html He's had a number of setbacks this year but he should be good to go next year. He's a very fast guy and STU in my neck of the woods is pretty competitive with a number of national level drivers and a few trophy winners.

                    Buying tips -
                    • Find a clean and clean-titled Evo
                    • 60k service is a MUST!!!!
                    • Don't let miles scare you but the price should reflect it ;)

Like any car, if it's not taken care of, things will start to break. My evo has loads to much power for auto-x. In stock form however they perform very well at our local auto-x's. You can make 350whp+ off stock turbo's with the right tune/fuel as well. Your options are limitless money wise but i would have to read up on STU ruling to see how much lee-way you have there with mods. The clutch on almost every AWD car will have to be "slipped" in order to launch hard and properly IMO, its not just an evo thing.

The differences between the 8 and 9 is $$$ The 9 will come with a different front bumper, a little more factory power/torque with the MIVEC head and you get an ACD transfer case.

The list goes on and on and on...

Two of my buddies have heavily modded Evo's. One has a insanely clean IX with nearly 400whp, and the other has a X with about 350whp. These cars are like robots. Amazing! Get one!

If you pick up an 8 with around 100k miles then I suggest you A) check the transfer case for the death whine and B) upgrade the open front diff to either a Quaife (always on back order), Wavetrac, or do what I did and swap in an Evo 8 or 9 RS helical front diff.

Upgrading the rear sway is must, alignment, and, if you can, just upgrade to a Evo 9 turbo, capable of almost 400 awhp on e85 :)

My Evo 8 with minor mods i.e., drop in air filter, front diff, rear sway, and an alignment was very fun at Streets of Willow. They make awesome track mules!!!

Just as an FYI to the OP (although you probably already know), while the upgrades quoted above would be nice, they are not legal for STU.
