What even happens to these cars when they get totaled out like that? I never see the motors etc in other things really.

I'm guessing they get rebuilt. When Mr. Bean was on Top Gear he said he had wrecked his McLaren F1 once or maybe twice and had it repaired at the factory.

They usually get rebuilt AFAIK. The ones that can't are probably paid out and destroyed.

From the sounds of it, the magazine tester wasn't at fault and I'm sure that there would be some sort of insurance in place on test drives anyway.
